Job Description

Title of Position: Research Librarian Department: Center for Library Services and Archives Reports To: Manager, Center for Library Services and Archives Position Summary: Serves as point of contact for research and information support to members as well as all departments within AORN, the Board of Directors, Committees, Task Forces, and non-members. Responsibilities • Serves as point of contact for Nursing Practice (CNP) and Education (CPE) staff for research and information support. • Monitors Nursing Practice and Education departmental information needs and research priorities and anticipates and tracks requirements for information products and services. • Contributes to departmental long range information management and resource plans. • Serves as point of contact for reference and research inquiries from other AORN departments, AORN Board of Directors, Committees, and Task Forces, AORN subsidiaries and tenants, and AORN members as well as non-members. • Provides end-user guidance and training on search techniques and strategies and assistance in selection and use of resources. • Responds to reference and research requests and performs literature searches for AORN staff, members and nonmembers. • Prepares all staff and committee literature searches using the RefWorks application, following the agreed-upon Best Practices. • Provides instruction in optimal use of RefWorks databases. • Creates alerts on key topics, including Recommended Practices topics, Clinical Issues topics, FAQs, and PNDS topics. • Creates and maintains updated RefWorks databases on these topics. Provides extensive quality filtering of the literature to support evidence-based practice. • Attends CNP and CPE departmental meetings and planning sessions as appropriate to anticipate and maintain continuous awareness of departmental research needs and priorities. • Recommends strategies, resources and procedures to meet staff and committee information needs. • Works individually with CNP and CPE staff to identify information requirements and to develop action plans to meet those requirements. • Assists staff with research in response to member queries. • Conducts one-on-one and group sessions to familiarize staff with available resources, to demonstrate search tips and techniques, and to evaluate search results with emphasis placed on evidence based resources. • Works with committee liaisons to identify information requirements, establish delivery schedules, attend committee orientation meetings, and provide instruction in access to and use of resources. • Instructs members in the use of their institutions’ libraries and in literature searching techniques. • Instructs members in the use of the online AORN Journal and Medline, including literature searching techniques. • Researches incomplete bibliographic citations. • Informs Library Manager of Headquarters staff activities and information needs as well as member information needs. • Assists CNP and CPE with reference collection development. Assesses resources and recommends collection development strategies and new acquisitions that reflect changing departmental needs and priorities. Works with AORN Library Manager to develop main AORN library collection. • Continually monitors satisfaction with library services and resources. • Supports AORN website and Patient Safety First website with content contributions. • Reviews AORN Journal indexing submitted by indexer. • Compiles detailed statistical and narrative monthly reports to document services. • Serves as backup for Library Manager as needed. • Other duties as assigned.

HR Info

• Master of Library Science (MLS) required, with demonstrated expertise in use of bibliographic research tools. • Health sciences library experience highly desirable. • RN preferred. • Demonstrated ability to precisely identify information needs and to identify resources and formulate strategies to meet those needs. • Ability to impart resource selection and database searching skills to end users, formally and informally, in groups or one-on-one. • Familiarity with OVID and other online database searching. • Familiarity with RefWorks application. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with quality products. • Excellent communication and teaching skills. • Enthusiasm for technology. • Ability to embrace change. • Utmost service orientation.
