Job Description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Catalogs book and electronic resources; handles special project cataloging; updates Digital Repository, including processing objects, and assigning metadata.

RESPONSIBILITIES (· denotes essential/primary responsibilities, o denotes secondary responsibilities)

  • Provide cataloging and bibliographic maintenance of resources, such as cataloging electronic resources, current books, oversize and folio books, curriculum books, internet sites, as well as other projects identified by the Cataloging Supervisor.
  • Evaluate, edit, download and update records to conform to Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) or Resource Description & Access (RDA) standards and authority database.
  • Load batch bibliographic records from publishers and vendors into the library’s local system.
  • Withdraw identified titles and other materials by deleting records from local database, removing holdings from Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), and processing items for withdrawal.
  • Create original catalog records for materials not found in OCLC, and add records to the national OCLC database.
  • Provide work direction and problem solving assistance for student assistants.
  • Create and process metadata for the Digital Archives of Colorado College (DigitalCC) using locally developed standards and those of the Digital Library Federation (DFL); collaborate with the Digital Innovations Librarian on a variety of issues related to the Digital Archives, including quality control and documentation.
  • Evaluate and enhance self-submitted thesis materials in Digital CC; assess the accuracy of self-submitted metadata and correct as needed; determine and assign appropriate Library of Congress subject elements to the metadata.
  • Arrange scanning and editing of texts designated for Digital Repository.
  • Coordinate and work on other special projects as identified and assigned by the Cataloging Supervisor and the Metadata/Systems Librarian.
  • Serve as a member of the Cataloging Group and participate in interdepartmental support of other library activities.
  • Participate in continuing education in the form of workshops, webinars, and training sessions in the library and elsewhere.
  • Support and actively contribute to the goal of achieving greater diversity, inclusion and equity at Colorado College and work effectively with all members of the campus community.
  • Promote a culture of safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe situations and accidents; following college procedures; and participating in appropriate safety training.
  • Demonstrate environmental sustainability by using college resources wisely and supporting the college’s sustainability initiatives and innovation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two years college/Associate's degree or equivalent work experience plus a minimum of two years of related experience; proficient with computer software programs-including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Web browsers, and file management; knowledge of information systems, specialized library software including library management systems, and expertise in management of bibliographic records; knowledge of OCLC, Machine-Accessible/Readable Cataloging (MARC) and other electronic coding systems; well-organized, attention to detail, and ability to work with bibliographic records for extended periods of time; ability to balance multiple priorities and work in a collegial team environment; excellent interpersonal communication skills. Physical requirements include moderate physical effort (lifting up to 40 pounds).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree; cataloging experience; experience using MARC, AACR2, RDA and Library of Congress classification software, OCLC, Innovative Interfaces, Metadata standards such as MODS, Schema.org, BIBFRAME and other LinkedData vocabularies.
