Job Description

Reporting to the Coordinator of Digital Collection Services (DCS), this position serves as the head of the Digital Repositories Unit, and is responsible for the technical, bibliographic, and metadata management of the CSU Libraries’ digital institutional repository system, including coordination of data files and workflows for collaborative processes. This position will be filled at either the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

This position works closely with staff in the Digital Library and ePublishing Services Division and other Libraries units, including Archives and Special Collections, to leverage the full range of library expertise and resources in building and managing the consortial digital repository, Digital Collections of Colorado (http://dspace.library.colostate.edu), and its content. The Digital Repositories Librarian also serves as a member of the department’s management team.

Head, Digital Repositories Unit:
• Supervises one faculty member and one Administrative Professional;
• Examines, analyzes, designs, and manages unit activities and workflows to improve efficiency;
• Develops best practices and standards and quality review procedures; 
• Builds on staff members’ technical skills to establish and maintain a cohesive unit;
• Coordinates unit activities with other DCS departmental staff to promote the team environment;
• Works closely with the staff of the Digital Library and ePublishing Services Division and other CSU Libraries units to ensure that research data are properly formatted, accessible, and discoverable.

Management of digital repository activities:
• Serves as the lead in defining and implementing policies to develop the digital repository;
• Examines, analyzes, and designs workflows to improve access to information;
• Serves as lead contact with Academic Computing and Networking Services (ACNS) programmers on issues related to the repository; 
• Serves as an expert on digital repository and open access repositories;
• Contributes to strategic vision of digital repository; 
• Maintains and investigates programmatic operations;
• Monitors emerging trends in digital repositories technologies and management; 
• Manages Digital Collections of Colorado (DCC) collaboration technical operations and serves as their primary technical contact and support;
• Communicates with campus and external constituencies as needed;
• Provides training for faculty and staff members at CSU-Fort Collins and DCC libraries;
• Collaborates with other CSU Libraries units on repository operations and developing special projects.

Member of Digital Collections Management Team:
• Serves as a working member of the department’s management team; 
• Serves as a leader or team member for specific activities or projects;
• Serves on committees or task forces as appointed;
• Provides technical assistance to departmental staff members, including support for problem solving; 
• Assists the Coordinator by preparing reports and statistics; 
• Participates in other digital activities, including data management services, digital preservation and/or digital projects; 
• Contributes to meetings, overall planning, development, and assessment of activities; 
• Provides metadata for materials in all formats following accepted standards and best practices;
• Develops collaborative digital plans/projects as appropriate.

Required:

• MLS from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program or equivalent advanced degree;
• Minimum of two years’ professional experience in digital activities in an academic research library, including using technology to deliver digital content;
• Technical working experience with one or more digital asset or institutional repository systems, (e.g., DSpace, Fedora, CONTENTdm); 
• Knowledge of appropriate metadata schema/markup standards (including, but not limited to, MARC21, Dublin Core, EAD, TEI, VRA, METS, MODS;
• Familiarity with data interchange standards (e.g. OAI-PMH);
• Knowledge of digital formats (image, audio, video, object, text), and their associated best practices for online access;
• Knowledge of identifier schema such as DOI and ORCID.

Preferred:

• Experience managing the day-to-day work of technical staff in digital services; 
• Experience with consortial collaborations;
• Experience with training and supervision and development of documentation;
• Experience supervising or mentoring professional staff;
• Experience creating, reviewing, editing, and bulk loading of metadata or content for digital collections;
• Demonstrated interest in growing expertise in digital initiatives, technologies, standards and trends as they apply to open access digital repositories, scholarly communication, data management services and/or digital preservation;
• Experience with integrated library systems and digital collections; 
• Project management experience, including ability to plan, troubleshoot, develop strategies to resolve problems, initiate and implement programs, projects and services;
• Experience managing technology-intensive projects in a collaborative work environment;
• Knowledge of the semantic web and linked data;
• Experience with quality assurance and quality control in the digital environment; 
• Interest in pursuing development of e-publishing venues for faculty and students;
• Experience with issues related to intellectual access and copyright;
• Understanding of best practices in data management;
• Knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices;
• Experience working with XML and XSLT metadata transformations;
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively within a rapidly evolving environment; ability to work well with a diverse employee and user community; strong analytical and decision-making skills.
