Job Description

Summary:  Responsible for the selection of materials and collection maintenance as part of centralized collection development department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Selects and maintains circulating and reference collections using community and professional standards and library policy.
  • Order materials using vendor websites.
  • Order materials in a timely manner ensuring the steady flow of materials.
  • Coordinates weeding projects and provides training and support in the use of weeding procedures.
  • Negotiates vendor relations.
  • Responsible for the development of special collection.
  • Collaborates with other departments, librarians and branches to support their collection needs.
  • Analyzes statistical data in order to determine collection improvement strategies.
  • Implements changes to the selection and/or cataloging of material.
  • Monitors assigned budget area for expenditures in order to spend allocated funds.
  • Directs and oversees the work of volunteers and hourly staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including effective speaking, listening and writing are required.  Must communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Knowledge of current and classic books, literature, authors and illustrators for a variety of ages preferred.
  • Knowledge of current publishing trends.
  • Ability to use word processing, database, publishing and spreadsheet software.
  • Experience with online ordering systems preferred.
  • Experience using Innovative Interfaces Inc. Acquisitions, Cataloging and Circulation System is desirable.
  • Knowledge of the basic tenets of Intellectual Freedom.

Education and Experience:

Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university.  Candidates with a Master's degree in a related field and students who will complete their MLIS within 6 months of hire date will also be considered.  Two years related work experience required.   

Language Abilities:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Fluency in English is required.  Fluency in Spanish or other language in addition to English is desirable. 

Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to gather, interpret and present data.

Standard library work environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to handle, feel, talk and hear.  The demands on the visual sense are high. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. The employee is frequently required to push carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
