Job Description

#2017-00292 STEAM Coordinator.  One full-time position with excellent benefits.  Hours may include evenings and weekends.  This position will primarily be located at the 6 Garden Center facility.  

In partnership with Broomfield schools, businesses, and other appropriate partners, the STEAM Coordinator will develop STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs and activities for all ages.  Programs and activities will support inquiry and problem-based learning.  The incumbent will be trained to incorporate problem-based learning (PBL) methodology and multi-part programs to develop skills with a focus on programs that seek to solve local community problems and foster a resilient community working together to research, develop and implement solutions to community problems.  

The incumbent will design and implement all phases related to the development of STEAM activities: identifying potential partners and presenters, coordinating recruitment of volunteers, scheduling of activities/programs, developing evaluation tools, facilitation of programs and/or groups, provide timely communication with all stakeholders, manage budgets and submit data and reports on programming. The STEAM Coordinator will provide support, training and staff development for staff as appropriate.  The incumbent will seek, build and maintain relationships with a variety of STEAM-focused community organizations and cultural institutions.

The incumbent will be a future-adaptive, big picture thinker who can contribute to developing creative, innovative environments to maximize learning for all. The incumbent will exemplify the characteristics of a collaborative, innovative and resilient work culture and will create and maintain that environment within the department. Reports directly to the Deputy Director of the Library and Cultural Affairs department.

 
 Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties:

General Duties: Oversee operations and programming in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) for all age groups and abilities.  Design, prepare and implement instruction and training materials for various types of technology and tools.  Responsible for scheduling, staffing, and programming for 6 Garden Center. Oversees the Makerspace, Conference room and equipment at the 6 Garden Center location including securing the space and submitting all facility and IT requests for maintenance. Coordinates all STEAM programming at the Broomfield Library. Additionally, the incumbent will seek outreach opportunities that go beyond the physical library spaces. Serves as a catalyst for innovative thinking among all stakeholders and serve as a STEAM resource for the Broomfield community and City and County of Broomfield staff.

Budget/Resource Management: Provide leadership and direction in the development of short and long range plans; gather, interpret, and prepare data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinate department activities with other departments and agencies as needed.  Assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time.  Research and suggest technology and equipment purchases needed to maintain and expand STEAM programming.

Public Relations/Communication:  This position requires coordination and collaboration with schools, businesses, nonprofits and other city departments. Incumbent must possess excellent communication skills.  This includes written and public speaking, the ability to inspire and connect a variety of partners and the development of programs and activities to positively impact all ages of the community.  The incumbent will seek opportunities to connect with industry and sector associations to establish both connections and potential partnerships to enhance STEAM opportunities for every age and hosts community events to engage all critical partners (schools, businesses, non-profits, etc.). The incumbent meets and confers with Deputy Director of Library Services and Cultural Affairs and the Director of Library Services and Cultural Affairs to explain STEAM plans, programs, functions, policies and procedures.

Supervision: This position will coordinate with other staff members and take the lead on STEAM related programs. The incumbent will also supervise all program volunteers at 6 Garden Center and staff as assigned.

Miscellaneous Duties: Operates a personal computer and utilize Google applications. Operates a motor vehicle in order to attend offsite meetings and travel to various sites within and outside Broomfield. Participates in the development and administration of the department's work plan.  Identifies and recommends improvements in divisional and departmental operations to ensure functions are efficient and cost-effective. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, employs and enforces safety practices and procedures and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all required safety equipment.  Performs related duties as required.


 Minimum Qualifications:

Training - Master's degree in Library Science, Education or Science, Technology or Mathematics field.

Experience – 

One year of experience facilitating or presenting programs to audiences with a wide-variety of interest, skill level and age ranges. This person must demonstrate the ability to perform the Essential Required Tasks.  Experience with Problem Based Learning and/or STEAM related programming preferred. Experience with design thinking, web development, basic coding and programming preferred.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the necessary applicant traits.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: - Must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, driver's license check, background checks including police check and sex-offender check, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.  


 Working Conditions:

Requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Data entry and other tasks may require sitting at a computer for several hours. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
