Job Description

To facilitate the dissemination and retrieval of technical scientific information, CPW has maintained a research library since the 1960's.  This library function has been primarily administered through the Mammals Research Section.  However, the library serves the needs of the four CPW research groups consisting of Aquatic, Avian, Mammals, and Wildlife Health, and serves the technical needs of the entire CPW through web-, email-, and mail-based services to find, retrieve, catalog, and disseminate information pertinent to the conservation and management of fish and wildlife species in Colorado.

This position is represented by a solo librarian who administers and oversees all aspects of the CPW research library functions.  Functions include acquiring, cataloging, and shelving traditional library materials such as books, technical professional journals, popular magazines, CPW publications, reports, documents of public record, and other publications pertinent to the conservation and management of wildlife in Colorado.  Library assets are routinely catalogued into a standardized library system electronic database to provide inventory control and accounting of library materials disseminated to CPW employees.  The library routinely acquires publications in response to CPW employee requests and disseminates publications in hard or electronic formats to employees.  The library also provides or exchanges publications with other State and Federal wildlife conservation agencies, university libraries nationwide, and many libraries within Colorado.
The librarian formulates and prioritizes yearly goals and objectives for improving the library, develops and administers a budget to maintain and implement new services and capabilities with support of the Mammals Research Leader, oversees the purchase and integration of improvements in the library system, assists research and management personnel in acquiring information for their programs, occasionally oversees the work of temporary personnel assisting with library functions, maintains the library's accreditation in the Colorado library system, and enhances the working relationships with other libraries in Colorado.  Importantly, the librarian must be versed and capable of evaluating, selecting, incorporating, and maintaining new electronic library services inclusive of server-based search-engine database systems software, cataloging software, exchange format software, and other computer-based applications to better serve CPW.  The librarian will work closely with OIT computer technical personnel to maintain and enhance the electronic capabilities to serve the entire CPW.  The librarian will also help train CPW personnel to fully utilize the capabilities of the library services via web-based instructions, emails, or formal class training sessions.
