Job Description

The Library Director provides dynamic leadership in a team-based management environment to advance the Library’s vital role as a teaching library in undergraduate liberal arts education. The Director is ultimately responsible and accountable for overall Library operations and reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Starting date is July 1, 2008 or soon thereafter. Responsibilities of the Library Director: •Give strategic direction and vision for the library through organizational planning and overall assessment of library services and collections •Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with local, state, and regional library organizations •Coordinate team-based and interdepartmental library management through leadership of the Librarians’ Council and the All Staff Council, facilitating communication and decision making •Prepare and administer the budget in coordination with the Library’s Budget Team •Guide library development efforts, including active grant seeking and fundraising •Further creative approaches to the use of new technologies •Represent the Library and serve as its advocate to the College administration •Teach library instruction in the Library’s instruction program, as needed •May serve as a librarian liaison to an academic department, depending on subject strengths

See complete announcement at: http://www.fortlewis.edu/jobsRequired Qualifications: •MLS degree from an ALA accredited program •Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional managerial experience in an academic library •Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with internal and external constituencies of the library and the college •Experience in fundraising and grant writing •Demonstrated ability to administer overall library operations, including long-term planning and personnel administration •Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of a diverse community •Understanding of current issues and emerging technologies in academic librarianship •Record of scholarly/professional contributions to librarianship, demonstrating the ability to meet requirements of a tenure-track appointment as a member of the college faculty •Excellent communication skills Preferred Qualifications: •Demonstrated creative approaches to change and problem-solving •Teaching and library reference experience at the college level •Additional advanced degree.

The Community

The John F. Reed Library provides a collection of over 200,000 book and audiovisual titles, and online access to over 17,000 periodicals, and over 900 individual subscriptions. Its teaching role includes supporting library instruction in a tiered instruction program coordinated with the College’s general education writing courses. In addition to serving the college’s educational needs, the Library provides its services to the wider regional community as the largest library in the Four Corners region. Fort Lewis College is Colorado's innovative public liberal arts college, offering baccalaureate degree programs in the arts, sciences and the professional areas of teacher education and business administration.
