Job Description

This position will have an emphasis in programming and outreach for adults.

Job Title:   Librarian I
Reports to:  Librarian Supervisor

General Purpose:

To perform a variety of professional librarian functions, which may include but are not limited to: reference work; collection development; cataloging; circulation; programming; computer assistance; perform technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility; provide Reference and Advisory services; act as the Supervisor in Charge; participation in all levels of Library work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist in the review and composition of Library policies and procedures, including interpreting them for staff and the public;
Provide Reference and Advisory services for patrons of all ages.
Manage and refine work flow in areas of responsibility.
Develop and maintain collections.
Prepare statistical reports.
Represent the Durango Public Library and the City of Durango on internal and external committees and groups.
Provide friendly, proactive, and knowledgeable assistance to Library patrons at service desks and on the telephone, referring questions as needed.
Circulation duties, including:  issuing Library cards; checking materials in and out, including assisting patrons with these procedures; inspecting materials upon return for missing pieces or damage; changing the status of Library materials as needed; generating notices; and accepting payments for fines and fees.
Assist Library patrons in using various equipment, including: computers; printers; scanners; self-check stations; automated library material return; computer reservation stations; photocopiers; and other devices provided by the Library.
Assist Library patrons with electronic resources, such as:  the Library catalog; databases; and downloadable materials.
Provide assistance with Library provided software.
Communicate effectively with team members orally and in writing, including via email.
Assist in providing a secure environment for patrons, staff, and Library materials, contacting law enforcement as necessary.
Sort and shelve Library materials as needed.
Maintain the upkeep and cleanliness of the Library and the Library collection.
Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of library science.
Develop promotional materials and activities; create library displays.
 

Specialized Duties and Responsibilities:

The Librarian I position is trained in various areas of expertise, and may be responsible for some or all of the following specialized functions:

Establish and maintain positive vendor and community relations.
Classify and catalog Library materials, creating original cataloging as needed.
Plan, conduct, schedule and coordinate on- and off-site programming in assigned areas of expertise and responsibility.
Work with professional librarian staff on the review of databases and other electronic services, including development of training for the public.
Coordinate reviewing and sorting material donations with the Friends of the Library.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may require supervisory responsibilities, including acting as the person in charge of the building or temporarily supervising staff.  May temporarily assume responsibility for Branch Library. This position may also supervise the Library Materials Handlers and volunteers.

Job Qualifications

Education or Formal Training and Licenses:

Masters of Library Science/Information Science degree or the ability to obtain one in six months from position closing from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.

Experience:

Previous Library experience desired but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and Application of:

Principles of positive, friendly customer service;
Methods and techniques for locating Library materials;
Cataloging and classification systems, including the Dewey Decimal System;
Standard Reference sources in the Library field;
Library-provided databases;
Current literature and new developments in library science;
Computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Office;
Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
 

Ability to:

Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in person, on the telephone, and at meetings.
