Job Description

Summary:  Proficiently handles all circulation duties related to assisting patrons in the Circulation area as well as checking in and re-shelving returned materials. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:       

  • Performs shelving duties such as loading and unloading carts, ordering, sorting and shelving books, media, magazines, etc.
  • Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, flexible, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers.
  • Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas.
  • Performs circulation duties that include contact with patrons such as registration and renewal of patrons’ accounts, checking library materials in and out, collecting fees and fines, patron registration and issuing library cards. 
  • Proficiently handles the circulation functions of the library’s integrated system including log-in, placing holds and trace functions, and searching patron database.  Performs these functions efficiently with a minimum of errors.
  • Proficiently handles circulation duties including desk opening and closing procedures, use of all patron and circulation forms, and daily receipts. 
  • Stays current on Poudre River Public Library District policies, processes, procedures and technologies required to perform work duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Basic computer skills and knowledge.
  • Ability to arrange items in alphabetical and numerical order with accuracy.
  • Use a telephone, voice mail and other electronic resources.

  • Ability to work under limited supervision and to exercise independent judgment as required.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Abilities: 

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.  Fluency in English is required.  Fluency in Spanish or other language is desirable.

Reasoning Abilities: 

Ability to apply common sense and logical thinking in order to form a conclusion or judgement. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.   

Work Environment:

Work is performed indoors in a standard library environment with moderate levels of noise.  A Library Aide is required to work a variety of scheduled hours including days, nights, and weekends as needed.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

The Library Aide is regularly required to sit, stand for long periods of time, stoop, bend, reach, carry, push and pull.  Must be able to push a fully loaded book cart weighing approximately 150 lbs. and must be able to lift weights up to 50 lbs.  Must have manual dexterity to operate a computer and grasp books.  Must be able to read a computer screen and locate books on shelves.  Must be able to perform the various tasks of the job, which requires continuous and repetitive, hand and wrist movement.
