Job Description

What You'd Do

Provide system-wide internal guidance and leadership while serving as a Chief of Staff to the City Librarian. Participate in the development and implementation of organization-wide strategic and operating plans, with a focus on internal operations. Assist the City Librarian and Executive Team directors with ensuring that services and resources align with organizational priorities and are reflective of, and responsive to, identified community needs. Serve as advisor to and act on behalf of the City Librarian in her absence and as needed. Occasionally represent the City Librarian in high level meetings with City officials, Library Commissioners, Friends Foundation Board members, community organizations and key stakeholders. Provide leadership to and supervision of five library division directors. Analyze library operations and service needs and recommend and implement changes to improve operations, streamline processes, adjust staffing and improve facilities to meet identified needs. Assure that library operations, programs and activities are seamlessly coordinated systemwide, and required resources are appropriately balanced. Advance an organization-wide culture of creativity, innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement. Create a work environment that encourages high performance and accountability. Develop and model standards for internal and external customer service excellence. With City Librarian and appropriate staff, collaborate in the planning and management of capital improvement projects including new facilities and renovation of existing facilities. Assist in the formulation, development, adoption, implementation, and evaluation of the library's capital, operating and discretionary budgets. Lead major strategic initiatives and manage projects.

We have a new opportunity for a strong and energetic leader to join the Library's Executive Team to establish and support processes and systems essential for effective and efficient library operations and execution of strategic plans. The Deputy Director will work collaboratively with Executive Team members and others to develop and implement strategies to align the work of departments, branches and teams.

Although the full salary range for this position is provided, offers depend on qualifications and typically do not exceed the midpoint.  The City and County of Denver benefit package will be offered.

The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and may include evening and weekend hours.

Five years of management level experience with complex projects with oversight at multiple locations with at least two of those years in an executive capacity. Management experience must include fiscal oversight, evaluation of business processes, and policy and decision making experience with planning and organizing multiple programs, projects, operations or functions.

A Bachelor's degree. 

A Master's of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association and/or a Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Nonprofit Management or a closely related field (preferred, not required).

Experience in a leadership capacity at a large urban library or similar complex multi-facility non-profit or government organization (preferred, not required).

Experience with capital improvement projects (preferred, not required).
