Job Description

Job Summary: This position performs all public facing duties including but not limited to circulation, reference, and outreach to staff, Gardens members and others. Circulation duties include, but are not limited to, check-in and check-out of materials and managing patron records. The Librarian provides reference in gardening, science, related topics and on the Gardens generally. This position is responsible for opening and closing the library, training and supervising volunteers, and maintaining library services for all audiences.

Qualifications/ Experience: Prior knowledge and previous experience is required, including at least one years’ related experience or progress towards a Library Science degree; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Demonstrated strong organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills are required. Must be able to maintain accurate records, files and schedules. Familiarity with Microsoft Windows based systems and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to learn needed software & databases is required. Experience operating library system software is desirable. Knowledge of horticultural, botanical, and gardening topics is desirable but not required. Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide reference services to patrons in person, by telephone, and electronically.
  • Record accurate reference statistics and perform circulation duties such as check-ins, check-outs, in-house check-ins, and some book shelving.
  • Manage circulation responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, the sending of overdue notices and related correspondence, perform shelf searches to ensure accuracy of patron overdue records, and facilitate payment for lost or damaged materials.
  • Share management of library services and projects, including but not limited to the serials collection, interlibrary loans, reference tools, and special initiatives.
  • Develop and conduct outreach to children, adults, staff and other audiences.
  • Write book reviews, blog posts, articles and other assigned texts.
  • Autonomously open and close the library in a punctual manner.

Other Job Duties:

  • Assist with cataloging and managing of special collections materials as needed.
  • Assist with administrative duties such as maintaining office/library equipment, liaising with product and service vendors, ordering office supplies, etc.
  • Attend departmental meetings as assigned, acting as liaison between the library and other staff.
  • May supervise and/or train staff, volunteers, and interns as needed.
  • Assist with special events or programs that involve the library as assigned.
  • Work with all departments to assure highest quality experience for all DBG visitors.
  • Maintain satisfactory working relationships with managers, co-workers and others.
  • Maintain a positive, helpful and solution oriented demeanor when responding to or serving members and visitors.
  • Perform other duties as requested by management.
  • This position will work Saturday - Tuesday, approximately 7 hours each day
