The Community

Nestled at the base of the majestic Spanish Peaks and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado, La Veta Public Library District serves a truly unique community that is located along the Scenic Highway of Legends.  The District population is 1,250 year-round residents, most of whom live in La Veta or the mountain community of Cuchara. The Library is also well used by the out-of-district residents of Huerfano County.

The Cuchara Valley is a delightful, undiscovered destination. Amidst nature's great beauty you will find a refreshing small town quality of life combined with the sophistication of art galleries, museum, theater, dining, a fitness center, musical entertainment and shopping. For recreation there is hiking and fishing in our high mountain lakes and National Forest, mountain biking, camping, horseback riding, and winter sports at our new Mountain Park. Just one hour's drive from La Veta is the spectacular Great Sand Dunes National Park, and in just two to three hours you can be in Denver, Taos, and Wolf Creek or Monarch Ski Areas.  Admittedly, the restaurants are not always open in the winter, but locals embrace the peace and tranquility that comes with those six windy months.

The local population is older than the Colorado average, and better educated. The number of young families moving to the area is on the rise, however, and our schools are recognized with distinction by the Colorado Department of Education.

La Veta Library District has received Star Library recognition (Library Journal Index of Library Services) every year since the Index was initiated. Our community feels great pride of ownership for their Library, which is considered the most important anchor of the area.  La Veta Library is a great place to be a librarian!
