Job Description

Position is responsible for performing various duties related to the support of library patrons and to the active participation in improving the overall effectiveness and continuing innovation of library services. Responsibility for working independently and within a team will be required. It is expected that you will take a leadership role in one or more areas of our library services: instruction, reference, circulation, or technical services, and that the area you take leadership in may change. You may also act as a supervisor to student staff, as needed.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  1. Serves as a working member of the library team and the division of instruction. Collaborates with faculty and other staff to promote awareness of library materials, inform faculty about how to use library materials effectively in class assignments, and to develop imbedded library instruction within college coursework. Serves on relevant library and college committees.
  2. Participates with CHL staff in the development and implementation of strategic planning for library innovation. Includes developing library outreach efforts by collaborating with college and community groups, promoting active use of the library and developing displays and exhibits that foster student learning and a sense of community.
  3. Develops, delivers and evaluates library-related instruction to contribute to the library’s instruction program and campus information literacy initiatives. This includes teaching bibliographic methods in a classroom environment
  4. Leadership may be required in one of the following areas: instruction, circulation, or technical services. As a functional lead, position provides direction on processes and procedures; monitors work flow and may supervise work-study students, student hourlies or other temporary staff.
  5. Supports the daily operations of library circulation to include: assisting patrons with problems; compiling statistical reports; assisting in development of policies and procedures; and, overseeing inventory of books.  Staffs the service desk serving community college and public patrons approximately 15-20 hours per week, which will include nights and weekends as assigned. 
  6. Provides reference/research assistance to library patrons in a variety of formats, which may include one-to-one in person assistance, interactive web based assistance, and development of print or electronic materials and resources to educate college patrons on locating and evaluating information. 
  7. Provides technical assistance to library patrons in the use of library databases and equipment. Researches and resolves patron problems.
  8. Reviews order records on standing order/subscription information to and from vendors to ensure delivery; handles subscription extensions and refund requests; renews standing orders; reviews renewal lists. 
  9. Maintains and oversees various computer databases, to include: inputting and updating patron records; monitoring the circulation of library materials; performing searches to identify duplicate records; and, troubleshooting and resolving database problems.
  10. Oversees inventory of various library collections, materials, and equipment; recommends items for purchase; procures materials, supplies, and equipment; verifies and prepares invoices for payment.-
  11. Prepares or assists in the preparation of various reports, including monthly activity reports and the annual library expenditure report; makes recommendations as to what periodicals to order.
  12. Helps resolve a variety of operational problems, which may include but is not limited to: database issues; material orders, interlibrary loan requests.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION

  •  Graduation from an ALA accredited college/university with a Master’s Degree in Library Science.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 3 years experience. Placement will be commensurate with experience.
  • Equipment Skills: Knowledge and understanding of computer applications, Internet, and various library equipment, such as microfilm.

  • Other Qualifications: Knowledge of library procedures, applicable rules and regulations, library principles, cataloging and circulation principles, conducting research and reference material searches. Good communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. Knowledge and understanding of diversity and ability to work with a diverse college community.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in higher education environment working with students.
