Job Description

If you enjoy working with statistical data and reports plus have a high level of comfort using computers and software, then this part time, temporary position may be the job for you!

You provide core library service through access points to JCPL materials through our catalog. You ensure quality control of shelf-ready materials and records from vendors plus receiving, cataloging, authority control and processing of materials purchased for the library collection. You make certain JCPL materials are accessible through our catalog, records are kept current/consistent and that access points are intuitive to patrons and staff.
Your role provides copy cataloging and classification of all types of library materials physical and digital following current standard library protocols.
You are an active team member and provide a high level of customer service skills to communicate cataloging policies and procedures to front-line staff.


Cataloging Record Control:

  • Responsible for quality check of vendor supplied records; compares vendor-supplied processing to catalog record and JCPL processing profile.
  • Ensures vendor records load and display correctly in the public catalog and performs minor data correction (series title, subject headings) as needed.
  • Performs copy cataloging for library materials for which shelf-ready cataloging and processing is not available. 
  • Refers complex copy cataloging questions to librarians and refer authority clean-up projects to Catalog Librarian.
  • Directs materials that need label reprints to proper queue and directs items that pass quality check to proper queue.

Inventory and Data Control: 

  • Monitors street dates and turnaround to ensure availability deadlines are met. 
  • Will prioritize materials for efficient work flow and to meet deadlines and production goals. 
  • Assists librarians in running and processing collection status reports and updates records to bring them into compliance with current cataloging standards.
  • Performs standard data quality checks and performs maintenance functions to improve quality; participates in inventory control and reporting process. 
  • Ensures currency of records for materials being added or deleted in the catalog.


Supports Daily Operational Duties:

  • Assists in monitoring work flow through the unit and makes adjustments to improve processes.
  • Assists in creating a positive and productive atmosphere in Collections and assists in monitoring vendor performance and tracks and reports vendor performance issues. 
  • Provides support for special projects and keeps current on library policies and procedures relevant to the unit and library as a whole;  keeps current on all cataloging rules and/or procedures. 
  • Demonstrates expertise in cataloging software and products; participates in software beta testing for ILS and provides feedback to supervisor and reports software performance issues to supervisor and systems administrator.
  • Will participate with others in cross-functional teams to accomplish goals and objectives.


Other Duties:

  • May assume responsibility as Person-In-Charge ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures and standards. 
  • Takes appropriate action for emergencies as Person-In-Charge including requests for facility or equipment maintenance services.
  • Position must comply with laws governing patron privacy and confidentiality under CRS24-90-119, and the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association, as well as ADA.

Additional Info & Requirements

  • Available to work 20 hours per week, M-F, 4 hours/day
  • May be required to work some evenings, some weekends and minor holidays.
  • Offer of employment contingent on criminal background check and education verification.
  • Intermediate Reading, Math and Writing skills required.
  • Computer and technology skills as appropriate for the position.
  • 1 year of experience involving cataloging, MARC records and data file transfers preferred
  • Analytical judgment and decision making skills highly desirable.
