Job Description

Do you enjoy working with adults? Do you have strong maker skills? And do you also like to work behind the scenes,creating catalog records for library materials? 
If you enjoy this variety of tasks, this job is for you!
Under the general direction of the Library Public Services Manager, performs professional technical support for all library staff;  provides timely librarian services for adult library users; and completes electronic or physical cataloging of library materials in all formats. Performs other work as required. Schedule includes evening and weekend hours.

Adult Services (up to 60%)

  • Organizes, coordinates and presents events, programs, and instruction to library patrons, including STEM and maker programs. Teaches effective search strategies for using information resources. Provides technical support for programs and Makerspace activities. 
  • Manages equipment, class calendars, material in the Makerspace.  Trains and supervises volunteers in the Makerspace and for STEM and maker events.
  • Assists patrons in locating information and resources that meet their needs.  Provides instructional assistance in the use of library-support technologies and resources, including basic instruction in using new and emerging devices and digital resources.
  • Reviews and recommends general reading and reference resources in a variety of formats, including print, audiovisual and electronic.
  • Manages and monitors collections to ensure they are current, accurate, and relevant.
  • Manages appropriate portions of the acquisitions budget.
  • Assumes responsibility for Adult Services Division when working at the Reference desk, and assumes responsibility as person in charge of the Library in the absence of the Public Services Manager and Library Director.

Digital Services (up to 30%)

  • Provides technical support for library, as primary contact with ILS provider, City IT department, and database providers.
  • Writes usage reports, collects and reports statistics from database providers, ILS, and for library volunteers and programs. 
  • Coordinates with IT Department to update library equipment and software applications.
  • Acts as administrator for equipment and software in library makerspace.

Materials Management (up to 20%)

  • Reviews and edits machine generated catalog entries. Performs copy cataloging and original cataloging as required to create records in MARC format. Classifies materials using local call numbers and Dewey decimal classification system as items are assigned to bibliographic records. Creates lists and globally updates records for database accuracy, corrects bibliographic and item records as necessary.
  • Reviews and corrects/assigns load tables.
  • Assists in designing procedures, forms and manuals for Technical Services. 
  • Assists with informal supervision and training of volunteers in Technical Services.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

 General Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Library Science or technology-related field, with two or more years of customer service experience.
  • Strong technical skills a must.
  • Public Library experience preferred. Experience with III a plus.
