Job Description

SUMMARY

All employees and volunteers at Peak to Peak work together to fulfill the Peak to Peak mission statement. The K-12 Teacher-Librarian partners with the instructional staff in the development of student literacy through the administration of the library, providing specialized instruction to students, and overseeing the selection, organization, utilization and maintenance of the library resources. Committed to the process of collaboration, the K-12 Teacher-Librarian works closely with other K-12 Library Media Center staff, the Principals of the elementary and secondary programs, the faculty, parents and students to achieve academic and personal success for students. The K-12 Teacher-Librarian reports to the Elementary Principal and is a key member of the library staff. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  1. Operates and manages a student-friendly school library in collaboration with key library staff
  • Participates in program research, development, presentation and K-12 assessment
  • Selects, purchases, catalogs, and maintains print and non-print resources
  • Uses and instructs others in the use of Information Literacy Skills
  • Establishes a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment for a diverse population of students
  • Assists students and faculty with reference and reader’s advisory
  • Writes procedures and practices for collection development, circulation, and use of library resources in collaboration with key library staff
  • Creates library procedures and practices that assure consistent operations, fair access to information, and open exchange of ideas in an appealing environment
  • Oversees scheduling and access to computer labs within library media center
  • Organizes, trains, and directs library student aides and volunteers
  • Coordinates special events such as author visits, reading promotions, book fairs and exchanges
  • Provides library update sessions at faculty meetings as needed
  • Creates and sustains relationships with the Peak to Peak staff, students and families to support a home-school literacy

 

 

  1. Provides student supervision, appropriate Information Literacy Skills instruction and other instruction in support of the instructional goals of the school
  • Educates students in Information Literacy, 21st century skills, and digital citizenship skills
  • Instructs students in developing research skills and related use of technology and materials
  • Models and encourages reading in a variety of formats (print, multimedia, electronic)
  • Promotes a love of reading, literacy, and life-long learning through effective reader’s advisory
  • Collaborates with teachers from other disciplines and grade levels to systematically and meaningfully integrate Colorado Academic Standards, 21st century skills, and digital literacy skills
  • Facilitates book groups, novel studies, or other reading-related activities as schedule allows
  • Assists library and circulation staff as needed to provide necessary services including, but not limited to, facility monitoring and K-12 supervision, K-12 materials check out, K-12 Readers Advisory and reference, K-12 instructional collaboration and K-12 instruction and assessment services

 

  • K-5 instructional duties include:
    • o   Facilitates library lessons, read-alouds, workshops for classes/ groups of K-5 students
    • o   Plans and teaches collaborative lessons with K-5 classroom teachers
    • o   Consults on classroom-based projects requiring novels, research materials, books, etc
  • 6-12 instructional duties include:
    • Plans and teaches collaborative lessons with middle and high school classroom teachers
    • Instruction and rubric scoring with MLA, APA, and Chicago citation styles on student papers/projects
    • Facilitates library lessons, book talks, workshops for classes/ groups of 6-12 students

 

  1. Provides appropriate materials to support the instructional goals of the school
  • Selects and purchases high-quality books and other library materials to support K-12 curriculum and programs such as Core Knowledge units of study, class novels, and research databases
  • Collaboratively supports the development, refinement, and maintenance of  the K-12 school library collection to promote the academic goals of the curricular programs
  • Provides faculty with collaborative instructional services and library resources that support the subject areas being taught
  • Follows American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and American Library Association (ALA) guidelines

  1. Maximizes use of financial resources
  • Selects and purchases high-quality books and other library materials to support K-12 curriculum and programs such as Core Knowledge units of study, class novels, and research databases
  • Collaboratively supports the development, refinement, and maintenance of  the K-12 school library collection to promote the academic goals of the curricular programs
  • Provides faculty with collaborative instructional services and library resources that support the subject areas being taught
  • Follows American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and American Library Association (ALA) guidelines
  • Manages the library budget in coordination with key library and administrative staff
  • Actively participates in seeking external funding through grant proposals and other opportunities
  • Uses technology and networks to provide the optimal cost/ benefit ratio for resources

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

 

REPORTING STRUCTURE

The K-12 Librarian/Library Media Specialist reports directly to the K-5 Principal.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field required
  • Master's degree in Library Science and/or teaching experience is strongly preferred
  • Desire to work collaboratively in an academically rigorous, K-12 setting
  • Demonstrated experience building and managing library collections or working with automated library systems
  • Experience with college prep settings, academic research, and/or Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs
  • Proficient with variety of computer programs such as Google Apps or Microsoft Office Suite
  • Expert-level written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and skills in the following areas:  relationship and community building, communication, conflict resolution, creativity, problem solving, decision making and time management
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills
  • Strong self-starter; able to work with limited direction
  • Ability to apply superb judgment
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively solving challenging problems through a positive, collaborative approach
  • Knowledge of and commitment to Character Education
  • Entrepreneurial outlook and charter school commitment

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, policy and expectation documents, staff agreements, evaluation rubrics, survey data, AASL National School Library Standards and Framework, American Library Association’s “Freedom to Read” statement, Best Practices for School Libraries, Peak to Peak library's mission and vision statements, library use policies and other Peak to Peak documents that apply. Ability to analyze data to improve instructional practices and correspond with staff from all levels.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of staff, Board of Directors, Administrators and parents.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The hours may be long when specific needs arise, thus some extended schedules will be necessary.  This is a position that must attend the needs of staff, Administrators, Peak to Peak Board of Directors and parents. Work may consist of ten (10) plus hour days with Weekend work required from time to time.  Peak to Peak is a dynamic school subject to changing work environments, adaptation of new educational principles and values, and evolving culture.  Adaptability to change is essential.
