Job Description

Role: 

Supervises the operations of the Bibliographic Services function of the Collection Resources Department including acquisitions, cataloging, serials and mending; maintains the integrity of the data in the Information Library System, and catalogs library materials.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

30% - BIBLIOGRAPHIC SERVICES SUPERVISION – Sets standards for the Bibliographic Services and related District operations; plans develops and implements those standards in order to provide quality service; communicates planning and organizing information and decisions to Bibliographic Services staff to ensure the proper functioning of the Bibliographic Services unit.   E

30% - ILS DATA MAINTENANCE, REPORTING AND ANALYSIS – Maintains  the quality of the information in the ILS database by updating collection codes, overdue rules, manipulating system to reflect organization practices/procedures; maintaining and updating name, subject heading, and series authority records in Sierra database to ensure accurate information in the database and compliance with national standards; develops reports and analyzes data for Collection Resources and District reporting in order to  recommend improvements for operations; provides input to the functionality of the system in order to maintain usefulness of Encore, the database and code integrity.  E

20% - STAFF PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT – Sets performance objectives for staff; observes and documents performance; recognizes, rewards and disciplines performance; and recommends adjustments to pay in order to manage the pay and performance of staff.  E

5% - CATALOGING – Creates original MARC records for contribution to OCLC, using Anglo-American Cataloging Rules Second Edition (AACR2) or Resource Description and Access (RDA) for description, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) for subject analysis, and Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) for classification; searches OCLC for exact copy, edits the MARC record using national and local standards, and imports into local Sierra database.  E

5% - STAFF SELECTION – Selects staff by interviewing candidates for vacant positions, assessing qualifications, and recommending for hire the candidate that most closely meets the desired qualifications at a starting wage reflective of the hiring strategy and overall staffing plan for the operational unit.  E

5% - BUDGETING – Identifies resources needed to provide services, forecasts expenses to provide the services, recommends the annual cost of providing the services, and monitors expenditures throughout the year in order to recommend and maintain department budget.  E

5% - OTHER DUTIES – Assists the Collection Resources Manager to ensure the smooth operation of the department.  N

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

Master of Library and Information Science

*Applicants who do not have an MLIS but are looking to pursue and receive the degree are still encouraged to apply.

Experience:

One to three years of similar supervisory experience, recent practical working knowledge with ILS systems, experience with acquisitions, serials and cataloging.
