Job Description

The Oregon State University Libraries & Press (OSULP) invites individuals to apply for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor – Metadata Librarian position.

This position reports to the Director of Emerging Technologies and Services.

The successful applicant will join a collaborative and highly engaged library faculty and staff and will be an integral member of the repository development team. They will provide leadership for the development, implementation and assessment of metadata infrastructure, policies and practices for digital and physical assets. The Metadata Librarian will offer metadata consultation and instruction to both OSULP colleagues and the community more broadly, an effort that demands a strong knowledge of well-established and evolving metadata standards, as well as the practical applications of metadata standards to areas such as bibliographic records, research datasets, and cultural resource collections.

The Metadata Librarian will undertake their own research to inform practice and contribute to scholarly conversations in journals, at conferences, and in other appropriate outlets. They will participate in library and campus service and be active in regional and national professional organizations and societies.

Additional Info & Requirements

Required:

  • Two years of experience working with metadata in a library or similar setting.
  • Experience working with digital repository systems and/or digital asset management systems.
  • Strong understanding of information management concepts such as controlled vocabularies, authority control, data modeling, and schema design.
  • Demonstrated experience in the application and usage of general or domain metadata schemas for organizing and managing information (primarily Dublin Core and MODS; other metadata schemas including, but not limited to MARC, METS, EAD, or EAC-CPF).
  • Demonstrated skills with tools and techniques for data normalization, mapping, and transformation (e.g. OpenRefine, Python, XSLT, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to present and share ideas effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across the library and with our open source community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

Preferred:

  • Experience with both harvesting and providing content for harvest, especially with the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).
  • Demonstrated experience with linked open data and semantic web technologies.
  • Experience with migrating and remediating legacy metadata.
  • Experience teaching or developing curricula for teaching metadata or related topics.
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to learn new skills in support of program and library goals.
