Job Description


  • Excellent interpersonal skills with community, City, Library Board, Staff, and Friends of the Library

  • Library Degree and experience desired; High School Degree/GED required
  • Ability to perform physical rquirements such as lifiting up to 35 pounds, repetitive bending/reaching, etc., when they are "essential" to the job, and climbing stairs
  • Commitment to act with honesty and integrity in all matters related to her/his employment


  • The Director is responsible for the administration of the Heginbotham Library and reporting to the five-member Library Board of Trustees
  • The Director implements and administers Library policies decided upon by the Board of Trustees and advises the Board of Trustees in formulating new policies
  • The Director keeps the Board of Trustees apprised of the Library's operations; prepares monthly reports, including but not limited to: the curculation statistics; expenditures; programs; grants; and other pertinent information as directed by the Board of Trustees
  • The Director assists the Board of Trustees in the long-range planning of the Library's goals and programs
  • The Diretor represents the Library in community outreach including attending Friends of the Library meetings and Holyoke City Council meetings
  • The Director supervises hiring, training, and annual performance reviews of the Library Staff
  • The Director schedules all Library personnel hours
  • The Director assists in formulating and administering the Library budget
  • The Director keeps an accurate record of revenue from fines and other sources
  • The Director manages Library facilities in coordination with the Holyoke City Superintendent 
  • The Director will
    • Select new materials
    • Supervise the cataloging, processing, shelving, circulating and weeding of all Library materials
    • Accept donated materials
    • Keep accurate records
    • Inventory and purchase all Library supplies
    • Maintain Library online catalog
    • Keep abreast, maintain, and train Library staff in computer technology as it applies to Libraries
    • Develop and implement technology plan while purchasing software and supplies to improve the Library's current computer systems
  • The Director is expected to remain current in the principles and policies of Library Science through continuing education and professional meetings, and to encourage the professional development of the library staff in all such matters
  • The Director prepares accurate state and other governmental reports, such as the Public Library Annual Report (PLAR), as required for Libraries and submits them for review by the Board of Trustees in a meaningful way
  • The Director applies for grants as appropriate, including the annual State Grant for Libraries
  • The Director gives an annual report to the Holyoke City Council
  • Other duties as assigned 

Description of Community

Holyoke is home to the Holyoke Dragons and is truly a "City of Pride and Progress." Holyoke offers an airport, indoor swimming pool, 18-hole golf course, ball fields, skateboard park, tennis courts, fishing ponds, parks, camping facilities, motels, a movie theater, many churches, a nice variety of restaurants and many unique stores ready for you and your family to enjoy. It's also home to the Phillips County Historical Society Museum, the County Fair, and two facilities on the historical register ­ The Burge Hotel and the Heginbotham Library.

Agriculture is the main economic force, with excellent dry land and irrigated cropland to grow wheat, corn, dry edible beans, popcorn and alfalfa. You'll also find several fine livestock and feedlot operations. For those interested in productive farming and ranching land for pheasant hunting, Phillips County has over 30,000 acres of Walk-in Access Land.
