Job Description

This position will be primarily working in the Children’s Library to provide temporary support and assistance at the public service desk. Position is primarily scheduled in the Children’s section; however, may be asked to work in other areas of the library as needed. Provide customer assistance in person or on the phone. Greet and welcome the public and answer questions. Respond to and resolve routine customer needs that may include location of materials; information regarding library services or programs; interpretation of library policy; instruction in the use of the library automated catalog, Internet computers and accompanying software and other equipment such as copy machines, and microform readers. Answer basic reference questions using print and electronic resources; recommend book and other library material; and take inter-library loan requests. Refer patrons to other staff as appropriate. Maintain confidentiality of all patron data and information. Maintain necessary operating records and transactions. Perform routine data entry and retrieval; file materials; and complete other clerical tasks as assigned. Assist in maintaining the library areas to include straightening, picking up materials, organizing, re-shelving, or shelf reading. Assist in carrying out library programs for the public including assistance in registration, publicity, preparation and distribution of program materials, room set-up and clean up, and audience supervision. Take proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all required safety equipment. Perform related duties as required.

Additional Info & Requirements

One year experience in a customer service position requiring extensive public contact in person and on the phone. Some library experience or experience working with children and youth preferred. OR Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.
