Job Description

Role: Manages the operations of the Collection Resources Department including Collection Development, Technical Services, and Interlibrary Loan. Major Duties and Responsibilities: 30% - COLLECTION RESOURCES MANAGEMENT – Sets standards for the operation of the department, develops concepts, practices, techniques and innovations to improve the quality of the library collections, challenges operating processes for greater efficiency and effectiveness; manages materials selection, collection maintenance policies, procedures and guidelines; and facilitates problem solving in order to manage the department operations. 20% - RESOURCE MANAGEMENT – Supports direct reports by developing and managing budget, staff and other resources in order to provide the necessary resources to accomplish the goals of the department. 10% - OPERATIONS CONTROL – Sets goals for the department, establishes timelines for completion, and monitors achievement by reviewing reports from staff and Finance in order to control operations and achieve desired outcomes for the department. 10% - SUPERVISION OF STAFF – Gets information, makes sense of it, sets objectives, organizes resources and makes decisions, coach staff and provides feedback, manages conflict and appraises performance in order to optimize the expected performance of staff. 30% - COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT – Develops a portion of the library district’s collection by analyzing the service community, receiving input from Managers and Librarians, reading reviews and making selections for materials to be added to collection; weeds materials by reviewing suitability for collection goals, physical condition and check out statistics in order to develop the collection. Minimum Requirements: Masters Degree in Library Science Three to Five years of similar experience Success Factors: Initiative Creativity Emotionally intelligent Knowledge of public library goals, policies and services Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of professional library science and administration Knowledge of reader interest levels and group and community interests Knowledge of professional library literature, multi-media, and library technology Knowledge of the principles, practices, theory and applications of public personnel management Knowledge of print and online reference resources Knowledge of collection development practices and theories Skill in customer relations Skill in management and supervision Skill in oral and written communication Skill in Horizon Skill in Windows, Word, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Skill in reviewing book and DVD reviews Able to align strategy with people, processes and systems Able to model expected employee behavior Able to budget and plan Able to organize, manage, and evaluate the work of professional, paraprofessional, and other library personnel Able to analyze issues and make informed recommendations Able to operate various office equipment including copiers Able to evaluate reading trends

The position will oversee the collection development, technical services and ILL of five full service branch libraries totaling 500,000 items.
