Job Description

As data of all kinds becomes more open and available on the web, you understand how the library catalog is key to connecting our patrons with knowledge. You provide consistent quality control of the library’s discovery systems and support accessibility of resources through cataloging, classification, preservation and archives. You are a cataloging trendsetter, always looking for ways to describe new resources and make our records available in new ways. Changing cataloging standards don't scare you; you're ready to tackle BISAC, BIBFRAME and linked data elements head-on.

Work involves the responsibility for supervising the library's technical services department and coordinating efforts with collections development and other library services, functions and policies as needed; maintaining an accurate, up-to-date database of library holdings; and physically processing items being added to and withdrawn from the collection.

Duties include developing procedures for processing all library materials, training and management of technical services staff, preparing an annual budget as it relates to technical services, and representing the Library in regional meetings as the database liaison and internal authority on automation issues.

Inventories and reports technical services supply needs, works at the public service desk as needed, and performs other duties, as assigned by Library Director.

Additional Abilities
• Thorough knowledge of contemporary bibliographic-maintenance standards and practice, including the Anglo-American cataloging rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, cataloging in the cloud with WMS, OCLC/MARC records, and the building and preservation of digital collections. You respect MARC but understand that libraries will soon need to find a better way to encode catalog data. You help prepare the library for this transition by keeping up-to-date on new developments in the cataloging world.
• Thorough knowledge of reference tools and procedures. You're an explorer of ways to bring non-traditional content into the catalog, helping to make the library the go-to source for the greatest playlists, apps, technology tools and more.
• Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, officials of other agencies and the general public. You're excited about the prospect of growing and learning in a changing environment, and you inspire fun in the people around you.
Qualifications

A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university plus three years library experience including one year in technical services work, OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting on the basis of one year of experience for each year of education.
