Job Description
The Montana State University Library seeks an individual who has experience with collection development and acquisitions in an academic library. Reporting to the Head of Collection Access and Technical Services (CATS) and collaborating with librarians, faculty, and library staff, the Collection Development Librarian manages allocation and expenditures of the materials budget and associated endowments. The Collection Development Librarian provides leadership and expertise to Montana’s consortium of academic libraries (TRAILS) on potential shared purchases and serves as the primary TRAILS contact on collection issues. As a member of the CATSdepartment, the Collection Development Librarian supervises the work of staff members as appropriate and collaborates with the Electronic Resources and Discovery Services Librarian. Along with other library colleagues, this position promotes the Library’s program for the adoption of high-quality Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access (OA) materials.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees all acquisitions processes and workflows, including firm orders, approval plan profiles, demand-driven acquisitions, evidence-based acquisitions, and standing orders.
- Serves as an expert in the use of the Ex Libris Alma Acquisitions module, including fund structures, vendor codes, EDI, etc.
- Makes selection and retention decisions based on the Library’s Collection Development policy, involving other librarians in the process as appropriate.
- Works with campus and library constituents on developing relevant subject areas and keep abreast of current areas of teaching and research at MSU.
- Analyzes cost and usage data for subscription considerations.
- Interacts and negotiates with vendors, publishers, and library consortia for selection and evaluation purposes.
- Compiles the Library’s annual collections and acquisitions statistics for internal and external reports.
- Provides leadership in reviewing and updating processes, procedures, and policies related to collection activities.
- Maintains awareness of copyright issues with regard to pricing, acquisition, and provision of materials.
- Keeps abreast of publishing initiatives such as OER and OA and promotes the adoption and use of such materials, as appropriate.
- Co-chairs the TRAILS consortium Collection Development Committee.
- Develops a research agenda that results in publications/presentations to meet promotion and tenure requirements.

The MSU Library has 55-60 employees, including approximately 18 tenure-track faculty and 35 staff.
