The next Director of the Library will join the college at a critical juncture as it lays the groundwork for the next era of growth and achievement. With the arrival of a new president in summer 2018, Fort Lewis College is developing a new vision built on “Students at the Center.” In addition to understanding the fundamental role of the library to student success, the successful candidate will possess the visionary capacity to develop initiatives that align with the mission of the College and who brings a spirit of partnership and collegiality to the governance of Reed Library and its relationships with others. Reed Library is looking for an inspiring and successful professional that will recognize the unique needs of our student population and will continue to develop the Library’s resources, services and initiatives to anticipate and meet those needs. The staff at Reed Library seek a collaborative, transparent leader who will foster the growth and development of librarians and staff and is excited to work in a shared governance environment.

Who would I be leading?

Excluding the Director, Reed Library personnel consists of six librarians and six support staff who work in a collaborative, team-based environment. We enjoy our professional autonomy but are also looking for someone who can provide organizational vision and direction as well as oversight of everyday operations and guidance of personnel.

Additional Info & Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited program
  • Progressively responsible professional managerial experience, including significant supervisory experience, in an academic environment
  • Experience leading library employees in a collaborative work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with internal and external constituents
  • Demonstrated ability to provide oversight of and direct library operations, including longā€term planning, implementing initiatives and personnel administration
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Understanding of current issues and emerging technologies in academic librarianship
  • Excellent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as director or as head of a significant unit of an academic library
  • Experience managing library budgets
  • Experience leading efforts to integrate or implement relevant technologies that support teaching, learning, and scholarship
  • Experience developing and directing library initiatives
  • Robust commitment to information literacy, and a strong understanding of new and developing trends in higher education
  • Teaching and reference experience at the college level
