Job Description

Choose Joplin Public Library (MO) - A thriving library in a thriving community! Join the Joplin Public Library as its next Library Director. The nine-member Board of Trustees seeks a smart, seasoned professional to lead the Library into its future from a stunning 57,000 sq. ft. contemporary library which opened in May 2017. Funded by $12 million federal grant, the Library is a destination offering current technologies in its new maker space, collaborative group spaces, and strong collections. The Library has an excellent staff with a strong customer service focus and a unique partnership with the Post Art Library, a privately endowed 501(c)3 not-for-profit housed in the public library, providing public access to arts-related resources and programs.  The Library operates on a $2.2 million annual budget with a committed staff.  Key opportunities include creating and expanding external partnerships with local agencies and organizations, visioning and implementing a new strategic plan, and seeking new funding sources—including the possibility of a tax levy increase in the next two to three years.

Responsibilities. The Library Director, under guidance of the Board of Trustees, develops and maintains the library service program meeting the needs of its constituents in the Joplin Public Library service area.  Through ensuring delivery of quality programs and services, the Director works closely with the Board and staff recommending and developing policies; developing and implementing the Strategic Plan; actively engaging in public relations and media opportunities; understanding community needs; actively participating in the Joplin community; understanding the funding structure and developing the annual operating budget; seeking and establishing collaborative partnership opportunities; staying abreast of industry trends; and creating and sustaining a positive work environment.

Additional Info & Requirements

Qualifications. Minimum requirements include a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program and five years of library experience with at least three years of administrative/supervisory experience; or equivalent background and experience that will enable the candidate to perform effectively the work required.  Essential skills include (1) knowledge of library principles, practices and trends through active professional development; (2) commitment to staying well-informed on legal, financial and other relevant issues dealing with Missouri public library law and general operations; (3) ability to analyze data and information for decision making, recommendations and preparing reports; (4) excellent verbal and written communication skills serving as the Library’s spokesperson; (5) an understanding of personnel management to lead an engaged and thriving staff; (6) initiative, awareness and vision in developing library services; and (7) skill in building and maintaining effective relationships with the Library Board, staff, elected and appointed officials and community leaders. Public library experience, including a successful track record reporting to a governing board and experience with a tax levy, are preferred qualifications.
