Job Description

The Circulation Desk Specialist position is one of three full time classified staff in the Access Services Department that report directly to the Access Services Coordinator. This position works at the circulation desk to provide a wide range of support and services to SOU students, faculty, staff, other affiliates, and the general public, including opening the library Monday-Friday. As the first service desk seen upon entering the library, primary areas of responsibility include: 1) assisting library users with informational and directional questions about library services, resources, and spaces; 2) performing routine and some non-routine circulation transactions such as borrowing eligibility, requesting from local holdings or other libraries, items reported missing/ lost/damaged/or claimed returned; 3) assisting with the supervision of student employee work at the Circulation Desk by coordinating shift coverage, assigning work, and engaging student employees with job development skills; and 4) ensuring that the service desk area is fully stocked with supplies and resources necessary for overall smooth desk operations throughout all library open hours. Other areas of responsibility include backup support for: 1) Resource Sharing to print, pull, and process items borrowed from and loaned to other libraries; 2) Stacks Maintenance and use of the Library of Congress & Dewey Decimal classifications systems; 3) the library Research Lab to troubleshoot minor computer, printer, and copier problems. This position also works a flexible schedule during library extended hours, and during staff absences as needed.
