Job Description

The Metadata Services Department supports the University Libraries' mission by providing thorough and timely intellectual access to information resources. In this role, in collaboration with clients and the wider library community, you will help promote client self-sufficiency in finding, identifying, selecting, and obtaining resources. By responding flexibly and imaginatively to evolving demands on the Metadata Services Department, you'll help us meet our goals. You will contribute metadata to the Libraries' digital collections, primarily but not exclusively those housed in digital repositories such as the CU Digital Library, the CU Scholar institutional repository, and the Libraries' instance of ArchivesSpace. You will have a leadership role in digital projects and non-MARC metadata provision and substitute for the Metadata Librarian during periods of absence and you will have responsibilities in a broad array of areas throughout the Metadata Services Department.

What your key responsibilities will be: 

Supervision

  • Directly supervise and manage work of the unit's Library Technicians, including training, assigning work, designing projects, compiling statistics, and managing performance. 
  • Train and revise the work of student worker(s) for special projects. 

Project Management 

  • Manage ongoing projects, such as metadata provision for digital collections.
  • Assist with special projects, such as the migration of digital collections metadata to a new platform, and other projects as they arise. 
  • Aid in the development and documentation of procedures for carrying out project work.

Metadata Creation for Digital Collections 

  • Create metadata for a wide variety of materials for use in the Libraries' digital repositories. 
  • May create original metadata records or repurpose existing metadata.
    • Specific assignments vary over time according to the needs of the department and may include but are not limited to still images, electronic text, video, audio, geospatial material, and 3-dimensional objects. 
    • May apply a variety of metadata content standards (AACR2, RDA, CCO) as well as various metadata schemes (Dublin Core, VRA Core, MODS, PBCore).
    • Apply terms from selected controlled vocabularies (e.g., TGN, AAT, LCSH, FAST) according to collection needs
  • Create and update records using digital repository software (LUNA, Samvera, Digital Commons, ArchivesSpace, etc.). 

Professional Development 

  • Enhance professional abilities and skillsets through workshops, collaboration, and technical publications.
  • Develops skills in:
    • Batch processing for use in a variety of platforms to create and edit records for digital materials in the most efficient/accurate manner. 
    • Data structures commonly used with non-MARC metadata such as XML, JSON, and MS Excel/CSV. Stays current with common non-MARC metadata schemes such as Dublin Core, MODS, and VRA Core. 

Communication 

  • Communicate with personnel in other departments regarding procedures, answering questions, and explaining current activities. 
  • Correct and update metadata for items in digital repositories.
  • Collaborate with a variety of campus partners. 

Additional Info & Requirements

What we require: 

  • Bachelor's Degree. 
    • Appropriate experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis
  • Three years of library experience with at least one year of experience in cataloging and/or metadata. 
    • Substitution: A Master's of Library and Information Science or the equivalent may substitute for up to two years of general library experience.

What we would like you to have:

  • Experience supervising classified staff and/or student employees.
  • Experience in providing access to library resources (e.g., cataloging, metadata creation, etc.).
  • Familiarity with authority records and controlled vocabularies such as LCSH, AAT, TGN, etc. 
  • Experience with OCLC Connexion.
  • Experience with Innovative Interfaces Integrated Library System.
  • Experience with LUNA, Digital Commons, Samvera, ArchivesSpace, or other digital repository/metadata provision tools.
  • Familiarity with OpenRefine, MS Excel, and MarcEdit.
  • Familiarity with XSLT and/or one or more scripting languages.
  • Working knowledge of at least one language other than English.
