Job Description

Position Summary

This full-time position reports to the Coordinator of Cataloging and Metadata Services Librarian, performs the highest-level cataloging, and is responsible for a variety of library tasks including complex edit, adaptive, and original cataloging in all formats. This position possesses an advanced understanding of cataloging rules, standards and the ability to interpret overall library policy and procedures. Ability to resolve complex cataloging issues; contributes analysis and quality assessment of vendor supplied records; works independently to solve problems. Participates as a member of the Cataloging department and serves as a resource to staff regarding the application of national and local cataloging policies and procedures to specific situations. This position also works closely with the Curator of Special Collections, subject-specialist librarians and other staff to create enhanced bibliographic access to materials.

Essential Functions

  • Performs basic edit, adaptive cataloging in multiple formats using a variety of resources in a multi-system, networked environment.
  • Maintains a knowledge and understanding of current cataloging rules, standards, and practices including RDA, MARC, LCSH, LCC, and local cataloging policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to the upkeep of local cataloging procedure documentation as it relates to specific duties performed.
  • Recognizes and solves problems related to bibliographic, holdings, and item records; checks and updates library holdings in OCLC; performs other database maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Performs regular batch loads of vendor supplied MARC records for library acquired and licensed electronic content.
  • Performs batch editing of vendor supplied electronic resource records to ensure proper display and discovery within Alma and Primo.
  • Works on special projects related to cataloging and database maintenance, and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Because the library acquires materials in a variety of foreign languages, working knowledge of foreign languages is an advantage.
  • Basic math skills; ability to maintain accurate and thorough monthly statistics on work performed.
  • Good judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are needed to select and download appropriate records, to apply cataloging rules and practices correctly, and to ensure that records are accurately edited and fully accessible to patrons.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and to perform work with great attention to detail.
  • Ability to use an automated library system and PC.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications

    • Previous library experience including familiarity with online database systems.
    • Experience with the Ex Libris Alma library services platform, OCLC, RDA, LC classification schemes and subject headings, and MarcEdit.

Work Schedule

Part-Time, Varies. Evening and Weekends as required.

Hourly Rate

$17.47/hr - $23.00/hr depending upon experience.
