The Community

Rapid City combines the best of a multitude of lifestyles, with the cultural amenities of city life, the camaraderie of small town America, and the close-to-nature rewards of mountain living. Nestled on the eastern edge of the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, the area is known for its plains and pines, blue skies, rocky terrain, and abundant wildlife. A flourishing tourist and recreation destination, the area boasts national attractions such as Mount Rushmore National Monument, Custer State Park, the South Dakota Badlands, and the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. An astonishing number of smaller entertainment venues also dot the landscape. Residents as well as tourists never lack for entertainment or new activities to try. For a big city getaway, nearby Denver is just a few hours’ drive away, and the Rapid City airport offers direct flights to Chicago and other locations. Rapid City is known for its support of the performing and visual arts, world-class health care and its blend of western and Native American cultures. Nearby Ellsworth Air Force Base adds further diversity to the mix. Residents enjoy short commutes, affordable housing, and easy access to outstanding outdoor sports and leisure activities. Rapid City is a growing community. Housing developments extend the area’s perimeters in most directions, and Rapid City awaits the completion of two new shopping malls. A new initiative to revitalize the downtown area is a top priority for civic and community leaders. In 2007, the National Science Foundation announced the nearby Homestake Mine as the site for a new multimillion dollar science research facility. There is a lot going on in Rapid City and the Black Hills.
