The East Asian Studies Reference/Instruction Librarian is a tenure-stream faculty position reporting to the Faculty Director for Reference and Instructional Services. Duties include general and specialized reference in the social sciences and humanities with responsibilities associated with an information commons; virtual reference and instruction services; classroom teaching as part of an active library instruction program; selecting library materials in the areas of East Asian Languages, primarily Japanese and other Asian languages taught at the University of Colorado (Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, Farsi, Hindi, Korean); and guiding collection management decisions related to the vernacular and East Asian languages collections. This position serves as the primary liaison to the East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department and the Center for Asian Studies and assumes primary responsibility for the development and delivery of reference and instructional services for students and faculty in these units. The East Asian Studies Librarian supports the integration of new technologies into the Reference and Instructional Services Department and actively participates in departmental policy planning and delivery of services. The Reference and Instructional Services Department provides virtual and in-depth personal reference and instructional services to the students and faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder and specializes in services and collections for the social sciences and humanities. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Appointment and Salary: The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon professional experience and demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment may be at the assistant professor level or above. Starting salary range will be $50,000 - $56,500. Benefits include 22 working days vacation; 10 paid holidays; liberal sick leave; University group health care plan; group life insurance; TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity; and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave. Superior Japanese language skills as well as excellent spoken and written English. Two years’ professional experience in an academic library including, but not limited to, reference and instruction, collection development, familiarity and/or experience with virtual reference and learning management software, or Asian-language cataloging. Academic background in Japanese studies. Strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated potential for research, scholarly, and/or professional achievement at a national level.
