John U. Tomlinson Library supports CMU's mission of exceptional teaching and academic excellence by providing professional librarians, diverse and comprehensive collections, information literacy instruction and assessment, and a variety of services offered by all of our departments.

The library collection includes over 640,000 books, e-books, and audio-visual materials as well as over 120 databases of academic journal literature. Students, faculty and staff can borrow materials from CMU as well as other Colorado and regional libraries, including several large academic research libraries, with delivery to our Main and Montrose campuses, and Western Colorado Community College campus.

Description of Job

This position manages the Checkout and Reserves Desk during the daytime shift. This includes hiring, supervising, and training student workers, knowledge of Innovative circulation module and Banner, working within existing policies, and assisting with statistics.

  • Manages the day-to-day operation of the Checkout and Reserves Desk. Recommends additions or changes to procedures for overall Checkout and Reserves operations.
  • Implements new procedures. Communicates library schedule to Marmot and other entities as needed.
  • Oversees day to day operation of library public facilities. At times may be the only supervisor in the building.
  • Reports issues to other units such as facilities or police when necessary.
  • Responsible for opening the library Monday through Friday mornings. May need to open or close the library at other times when required.
  • Provides back-up for conference room and classroom reservations when Administrative Assistant is unavailable. Manages room reservations made at Checkout and Reserves.
  • Supervises student workers. Reviews applications, interviews, hires, and trains new student workers. Schedules student workers at Checkout and Reserves for all operating hours. Approves timesheets, manages work-study and student assist monies. Documents student worker performance as necessary and acts accordingly. Creates Checkout and Reserves student worker schedule.
  • Manages fines and monies. Enters student's fines and credits reflected in the library ILS into Banner to ensure that student's records accurately reflect charges and payments.
  • Main contact person for patron questions regarding library fines.
  • Deposits monies collected to University Business Office and/or CMU Foundation.
  • Manages patron records and statistics. Creates new patron records when necessary. Runs duplicate reports to clean up patron records.
  • Runs billed item reports to do shelf checks for billed items.
  • Runs Monies Owed Report in library ILS to obtain data for input into Banner.
  • Compiles patron and gate counts, and yearly circulations statistics.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights


Minimum Qualifications:  Two years of general library experience including any of the following: circulation operations, shelving, integrated library system (ILS), such as Sierra or Alma, fines or reserves.  Work must have been performed in a library setting.  Part-time work will be prorated.
  
Preferred Qualifications:  Experience with any of the following:  academic libraries, supervision (staff, student workers, or volunteers) and student account databases such as Banner.


Substitutions:  Two years of course work from an accredited college or university that includes twelve semester hours of library science course work may substitute for the two years of general library experience.  If substituting education for experience, you must provide a copy of your transcripts with your application.

Conditions of Employment:  In accordance with Colorado Mesa University policy, must successfully complete a criminal background check.

This position requires sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking and hearing.  Must be able to exert in access of 10 to 20 pounds of force occasionally.
