Job Description

Head of Information Technology (Librarian) Health Sciences Library – University of Colorado Denver (UCD) – Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) The University of Colorado Denver (UCD) Health Sciences Library [ http://hsclibrary.uchsc.edu ] seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking, and innovative Librarian to join us as Head of Information Technology. The UCD Anschutz Medical Campus includes the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry, the College of Nursing, the Graduate School and the University of Colorado Hospital. A new twenty-first century library building at the Anschutz Medical Campus opened in October 2007. It is the physical and digital hub of knowledge on the campus, coordinating access to information in support of learning, research, clinical care, and service to the community. The library is seen as a link between people and knowledge in this technology-intensive era, helping to overcome barriers, meeting needs for information, and providing navigation assistance. The Health Sciences Library provides the largest collection of health sciences information resources in Colorado with a digital collection of more than 30,000 online journals, hundreds of electronic textbooks, and online databases. Supervision: The Head of Information Technology reports to the Deputy Director. The position has supervisory responsibilities including oversight of both faculty and staff. Major responsibilities: • Establish policies, procedures, priorities and goals for the Information Technology department • Plan and coordinate departmental activities, workflow patterns, duties, and special projects • Responsible for managing a multiplatform environment. Library information systems include: Integrated library system (ILS), pay for printing solution, library’s website and SAN system. • Work collaboratively with library faculty and staff on development of user-focused electronic resources and services. • Oversee and plan for future deployment and/or expansion of library software and hardware. • Plan, implement and evaluate emerging technologies to provide coherent access to in-house and external resources. • Review, analyze, and recommend appropriate tools necessary to manage and deliver digital information. • Provide leadership for the selection and acquisition of information technologies. • Coordinate and manage the day-to-day operations of the integrated library system, Innovative Interfaces (III). Serve as the principal technical and operational liaison between Innovative Interfaces and library staff; administer staff accounts on the system; manage the installation and testing of new software releases; and coordinate and participate in training of staff at all contractually affiliated libraries sharing the system. • Assist other library departments with use of the integrated library system. • Keep current with trends, innovations, and best practices affecting library systems, including open and closed source approaches. • Provide overall guidance to IT support personnel responsible for the technology-related objectives of the library. • Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective, assets are safeguarded and applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures are complied with. • Serve on the Library Leadership team and assist administration in library planning, management, and innovation. • Contribute to the public services mission of the library by engaging with one or more other areas of the library including reference, teaching, liaison or outreach activities as time permits. • Maintain productive relationships with local and national groups that steer standards articulation; keep current with trends and developments in information science; cooperate with other libraries and organizations to reach common objectives.

Additional Info & Requirements

Required (minimum qualifications): •ALA accredited master’s degree in library science or foreign equivalent. •Five years post-masters experience in a health sciences, academic, or life sciences library. •Supervisory experience. •Experience administering an integrated library system. •Experience with project management (i.e., developing scope, targets, deadlines). •Knowledge of trends in library networks, systems and Web applications. •Experience in a mixed Windows and Linux server environment. •Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills. •Experience working in a team environment. Preferred: •3 years or more of supervisory experience. •Experience managing professional staff. •Technical, analytical, problem-solving, and trouble-shooting skills. •Administration experience in VMWare, Ubuntu, or Debian Linux •Knowledge of trends in information access in academic health sciences centers and the implications for IT in libraries. •Experience evaluating, recommending, and implementing emerging technology and appropriate tools to improve operations and services. •Experience acting as a liaison between library staff and vendor representatives to share concerns, gather information, and solve technical issues. •Experience collaborating with interest groups, such as campus-wide IT, multi-campus IT peers, consortia, and relevant local or national organizations. •Familiarity with information and equipment security standards. •Experience managing multiple projects collaboratively and independently. •Evidence of commitment to ongoing professional development. •Evidence of involvement in creating IT policies, procedures, priorities and goals. •Experience with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III).
