Job Description

Want to drive the library van all over town? Do you love creating order out of chaos? Apply now for our part-time Materials Handling Assistant position!

Lawrence Public Library has a 24 hour per week, part-time position open in the Materials Handling Department.

This position will require weekend hours with the occasional possibility to pick up additional shifts.

If you are hired for this position, you will work with the coordinator of the unit and a team of Materials Handling Assistants and volunteers.  You will work in the Materials Handling department and assist with check in, sorting, and shelving tasks as well as driving the library van, picking up remote drops, and supporting our locker service.

Here’s a list of things you’ll need to do/be:

  • You can learn and master basic tasks required to operate the automated sorting machine, standard office technology, and the library’s circulation software
  • You can sort and categorize materials onto carts and shelves in alphabetical and Dewey Decimal order
  • You are not afraid of work that requires pushing and maneuvering heavy and unwieldy bins or carts of library materials (regularly exerting 50 pounds of force)
  • You have a good driving record, valid Kansas driver's license, and feel comfortable behind the wheel of a large van
  • You have a strong work ethic, learn quickly, and work efficiently
  • You enjoy working with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities and ensuring their right to free access of information
  • You are super-reliable and dependable when it comes to keeping a work schedule
  • You are flexible if the schedule needs to change or if we need someone to pick up additional shifts
  • You are a team player and are willing to help out in the library where and when you are needed
  • You care about books and all library materials and will cheerfully inspect and clean them as needed
  • You love public libraries and understand that the timely check-in and shelving of materials to the library is an essential and important service
  • You have a high school diploma or GED and some applicable experience

So long as both Saturday and Sunday are worked, there is some flexibility regarding the final 8 hours for this position. Two possible schedules (totallying 24 hours each) are listed below:

  • Friday: 9AM-6PM including an hour lunch for a total of 8 hours
  • Saturday: 9AM-6PM including an hour lunch for a total of 8 hours
  • Sunday: 9AM-6PM including an hour lunch for a total of 8 hours

Or
