Job Description

 

The Community College of Vermont seeks an innovative, flexible, and collaborative professional for the position of Reference and Teaching Resources Librarian. As a member of VSCS Library team, this position serves the reference and instruction needs of CCV students and faculty, and partners with the librarians and library staff from Vermont State University as well as the Chancellor’s office in providing comprehensive library services to both college communities.

As part of the College’s goals to support a strong teaching and learning environment, the Reference & Teaching Resources librarian partners with relevant college departments to enhance online instruction, provide robust information literacy curricular integration, and help faculty promote lifelong learning and 21st century career skills. The Reference & Teaching Resources Librarian plays a key role in supporting the college’s efforts to promote alternatives to high-cost instructional materials and use of innovative teaching resources, including Open Educational Resources, eReserves, and library-licensed databases and streaming media.

In providing online services and remote access to library resources, CCV librarians work outside of a traditional library setting. The location is flexible within CCV centers.

Job Summary:

The Reference & Teaching Resources librarian develops and curates content for the library, partners with relevant college departments to enhance online instruction, provides robust information literacy curricular integration, and help faculty promote lifelong learning and 21st century career skills.

Essential Functions:

• Provide leadership in the planning, coordination, and delivery of the library’s information literacy education and outreach activities by project or as otherwise assigned.
• Provide faculty outreach related to instructional materials and manage information literacy and academic research instruction and consultations online including the learning management system.
• Lead project work with other VSCS librarians to create digital learning objects, including online research guides and video tutorials.
• Work with VSCS Assistant Library Director to develop policies and procedures for virtual reference and instruction.
• Provide reference service and research support to remote students and faculty via live chat and email, including one evening chat shift per week.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in the navigation and maintenance of LibGuides content management system (CMS) for online research guides in addition to other Springshare products.
• Contribute to the creation of information literacy and library instructional content, across a number of platforms.
• Serve as a point person for future e-reserves initiatives and faculty outreach related to instructional materials, including maintenance of guides dedicated to Open Educational Resources and Textbook Alternatives.
• Serve on system-wide library committees. Serve as a liaison to a CCV Curricular Committee and contribute to collection development efforts in assigned subject areas.
• Support course development initiatives, in collaboration with faculty, curricular committees, and other VSC stakeholders.
• Manage program development and public outreach services.
• Promote library information and news via cross-campus communications.
• Keep abreast of current developments and trends in librarianship and instructional technologies.
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Supervisory Oversight: This position reports to the Dean of Academic Affairs and will liaison with and may take general direction from the VSCS Director of Libraries.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program or equivalent degree plus three or more years of experience providing reference service, information literacy instruction, and research support in a higher education setting, or related college library experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated skill with various online environments including a variety of library databases, communication and social networking tools, and a foundational knowledge of instructional design.
  • Comfort with providing friendly customer service in a primarily online environment.
  • Familiarity with current trends, best practices, and innovative technologies in librarianship and higher education.
  • Familiarity with trends in Open Educational Resources and Open Pedagogy.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and be flexible in a changing and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within the College and the VSCS.
  • Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Learning Management Systems, particularly Canvas.
  • Experience using Springshare products and information literacy tools.
  • Experience with information literacy and library instruction in a college setting, either in-person or online.
  • Demonstrated understanding of relevant scholarly communication issues (e.g., intellectual property rights and Fair Use).
  • Experience with, or interest in, library assessment strategies.
  • Experience, or interest in, working with non-traditional students in a diverse educational environment.

Physical Requirements: Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties as a result of repetitive motion and/or long periods of standing or sitting. Duties require little physical effort in work with light to moderate (up to 25lbs) easy-to-handle materials.

Working Conditions: Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with many and frequent distractions such as noise and interruptions. Work schedule may vary during high volume periods.
