Position Purpose:

The Library Director serves as the library's leader and chief administrator within the goals, guidelines, and policies established by the University administration. This responsibility includes the organization and dissemination of information and services through the effective utilization of library resources. In addition, this position will serve as a change agent, guiding library staff through changes that will expand library processes and services within the vision of the University’s strategic plan.  This is a full-time position with full-time benefits.

Responsibilities:

Leadership: Provide vision and leadership for the library, and develop a collaborative leadership team by the following responsibilities:

  1. Uphold and further a culture of service and collaboration in the library and across campus; serve on faculty and other committees; and act as the library’s liaison to administrators and department heads.
  2. Maintain membership and engage in professional organizations.
  3. Stay current with emerging research and publications concerning academic libraries.
  4. Attend professional development conferences.
  5. Keep track of technological updates, tracks vendor webinars, and updates.
  6. Encourage and oversee professional development of library staff.
  7. Lead, organize, and set priorities for the library team as a whole.
  8. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, requirements, and policies.  Ensures the University has a designated copyright officer, providing guidance to faculty and students.
  9. Equip the library team to provide resources and technical management for the library collection.

Strategic Planning: Plan, develop, and implement library services and programs by the following responsibilities:

  1. Develop vision, goals, objectives, and actions for the library in alignment with the vision and strategic plan of the University and engages in ongoing evaluation and adjustment.
  2. Develop long-term and short-term goal items to prioritize, develop, and promote library services and resources. Goals should be regularly met for both the individual Director role and the team collectively.
  3. Advocate and champion the library’s needs and services with University administration and Board of Regents.
  4. Keep abreast of current trends and emerging needs of an academic community, including but not limited to physical and digital resources, technology, communication methods, and preferences, and curriculum.
  5. Ongoing resource assessment.

Budgeting: Prepare and oversee the library's budget, and present budget requests to the governing board by the following responsibilities:

  1. Establish and maintain a working budget for all aspects of the library, including but not limited to physical materials and resources, digital subscriptions and tools, repair and maintenance of physical materials, special collection items, and promotional materials.
  2. Facilitate and oversee installation of large purchases.
  3. Assist in collection development, including gift donations.
  4. Negotiate and manage subscriptions.

Staffing: Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate library staff and volunteers by the following responsibilities:

  1. Process departmental payroll tracking, staff workloads/schedules, employee timecards and PTO tracking.
  2. Complete performance evaluations for staff, including regular and ongoing one-on-one coaching with staff.
  3. Efficiently and effectively select, recruit, and hire library staff to meet the needs of the University, including student employment opportunities.
  4. Provide professional development and team building for individual staff members and the library team.
  5. Organize and manage library staff to optimize library operations and services.
  6. Provide ad hoc backup for reference, circulation, interlibrary loan, and electronic resources issues, personnel, and access.

Reporting: Tracks, tabulates, and manages library usage statistics/data by the following responsibilities:

  1. Lead the library staff to develop and administer questionnaires, surveys, and other tools to record usage, mood, and trends in library patronage.
  2. Report to administration on library statistics and budget.
  3. Reports to faculty trends in library usage and pertinent statistics.
  4. Submit required statistical reports for internal and external requests and accreditors.

Outreach: Promote library resources and services to students, faculty, and staff by the following responsibilities:

  1. Develop and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with administration, faculty, and staff.
  2. Engage regularly with department heads to develop and discuss current plans and align library services with departmental needs.
  3. Work with Marketing and Communications Department for social media messaging, a communication plan, and promotional materials for use in the library and across campus throughout the year.
  4. Oversee and delegate event planning and promotion, engage and collaborate with other departments as appropriate.
  5. Communicate with staff about actions and decisions, and keep faculty informed about available services.
  6. Develop library initiatives and programs such as displays, events, information sharing, and marketing.
  7. Lead, teach, and hold library instruction sessions for students, faculty, and classes.

Facility Management:

  1. Manage inventory and maintenance of library furniture, materials, and resources.
  2. Creates ‘spaces’ to promote learning and collaboration.
  3. Provide and regularly update emergency action plans for the safety and security of the patrons in the library and the collections.
  4. Plans for and supervise regular updates of the library facility.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education- 

  • Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Studies degree from an ALA-Accredited program is required.

Experience- 

  • Five years of professional library experience, with demonstrated leadership experience, is preferred.
  • At least two years of experience supervising and evaluating library personnel, in particular professional library staff is preferred.

Specialized Knowledge-

  • Basic computer knowledge of office software.
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and experience in, technical library services which includes cataloging.
  • Demonstrated experience with collection development projects, including short and long term planning.
  • Demonstrated experience with outreach and planning across institutional communities.
  • Demonstrated experience with teaching and training library patrons.

Proficiencies-

  • Knowledge of required reporting and compliance within area of expertise.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
