JOB SUMMARY: Under general direction, the Head of Collection and Technical Services plans, organizes and directs the ordering, and processing of library materials and maintains the automated functions of the library system. This position supervises the work of two librarians and one staff member. Work involves placing orders for library materials and receiving and checking shipments from publishers, cataloging materials, and making materials shelf-ready and maintaining the library’s automated system. This position also provides some public service desk work and library and research instruction in online and/or face-to-face classes consisting of traditional and non-traditional students. This is a twelve-month tenure-track position with faculty rank of Assistant Librarian. The position reports to the Library Director.
• Establish, monitor, and evaluate overall program of service for Technical Services division. Responsible for planning and program development, management of cataloging, serials and binding, and electronic licensing.
• Develop, implement and evaluate policies and procedures for Technical Services including the creative use of technology for technical services operations
• Work closely with the Director and key staff in overseeing the maintenance of the entire collection and establishing departmental priorities within general policy direction
• Responsible for the supervision of librarian and staff work as it relates to technical services
• Assist Library Director in evaluating and implementing the library’s materials budget including subscriptions
• Maintains statistics of technical services operations and prepare narrative and statistical reports
• Maintains an awareness of current library issues and trends affecting all library departments; read professional literature and attends workshops
• Maintains inventory of department equipment and supplies
• Develop and maintain the library automation system and automated administrative functions
• Perform and/or supervise the physical processing of all library materials for acquisition and withdrawal
• Perform and/or supervise the cataloging and classification of all library materials using OCLC, MARC, TLC, and the Dewey Decimal Classification system, including some original cataloging. Maintain knowledge of current trends in professional cataloging rules and standards, RDA, and public library practices and procedures
• Resolve catalog problems and questions initiated by Library staff
• Maintain inventory of department equipment and supplies
• Provide reference services through various communication methods to on-campus and off-campus students and faculty and keep accurate counts
• Work with assigned departments and co-workers to enhance the library’s collections and act as a point of contact for assigned departments
• Work within teams and departments to recommend and assess new programs, policies, procedures and services for public services.
• Actively develop and implement ideas for the promotion of the library to the university community including but not limited to programs, activities, and services
• Positively represent Athens State University in professional, community, and state organizations
• Actively participate in professional development and continuing education
• Assist in covering service points as needed
• Other duties as assigned
• Master’s degree in Library Science or recognized equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
• At least five years of experience in University setting in cataloging with working knowledge of acquisitions, ILS, and technical services management
• Through knowledge of contemporary bibliographic maintenance standards and practice, including all prevailing cataloging rules, Dewey decimal classification, OCLC/MARC records, and applicable library automation
• Demonstrated supervisory skills
• Evidence of strong service orientation as demonstrated by an ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, library personnel and the general public at all levels
• Demonstrated record of strong organizational, planning, interpersonal, oral and written communication and presentation skills
• Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and implement those deemed appropriate for the community.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:
• Experience in a related position
• Exhibit strong broad-based knowledge of reference sources
• Knowledge of electronic reference products and accompanying search strategies and techniques
• Knowledge of word processing and database software
• Knowledge of current copyright law related to libraries and higher education
• Familiarity with distance education library services
• Ability to understand, create, and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision
• Ability to plan and direct activities and to supervise multiple employees simultaneously
• Ability to complete tasks within a specified time frame
