Job Description

History Colorado's artifacts and original documentary materials are central to our educational and interpretive mission. The collection currently comprises approximately 225,000 artifacts, 1,000,000 photographs and moving images, and 15,000 linear feet of textual and archival materials.  History Colorado collects in three main areas: archives, artifacts, and photography.  Please visit or for more information about the collection. 


  • Programming and Outreach
    • Serve as primary program, outreach, social media, and tour coordinator for division activities
    • Develop creative and unique programs and activities to connect users to collections
  • Reference/Research Services
    • Connect users to collections
    • Support library activities through courteous customer service including library desk service on Saturdays
    • Locate, research, and process collections information to answer user questions
    • Serve as primary contact for email inquiries for Library, Collections, and Curatorial staff
  • Collections Accessibility
    • Use the database to increase and augment digital and physical discover ability, access, and use of the collection
    • Lead and coordinate HC website efforts for collections content
    • Facilitate online projects such as DPLA, lexicon cleanup, and the database portal
  • Collections Work
    • Assisting Collections and Curatorial staff with permanent collection projects such as storage and retrieval, outreach, problem-solving, backlog, inventories, conservation, implementing standard cataloging, and other registration projects as needed
  • Solicit, train, and supervise volunteers to assist with projects

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights


  • Experience in project management, meeting deadlines, and flexible multi-tasking in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Effective communication, public speaking, and cooperation with other museum staff, especially Library, Collections, and Curatorial staff
  • Ability to work independently and eventually make decisions with or in absence of a supervisor
  • Experience with innovative and/or motivated approaches for collections outreach and providing access to collections
  • Excellent customer service and research skills
  • Strong understanding of typical collections problems, collections and provenance research, and problem-solving skills with collections objects


  • Master's degree in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Library Science (or related degree) with a  minimum of 2 years of practical experience (preferred candidate will have experience and/or degrees in both museum and archives/special collections/library)
  • Handling, storage, and experience with large collections or high volumes of activity at a medium to large institution (or experience that is comparable) with a large collection and/or multiple sites, including artifacts and archival materials
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with collections management databases, metadata standards, and cataloging standards common to museums and archives, strong experience with ARGUS preferred.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Colorado history and history of the American West

Supplemental Information


  • Must be able to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule  
  • This position requires the ability to lift boxes up to 40 lbs from 14' shelves using a ladder and must be able to climb ladders
  • Successful candidate must pass a criminal history background check prior to hire
