Job Description

Nature of Work:
The IT Department at the Health Sciences Library (HSL) provides server and workstation administration and maintenance, as well as web and IT systems design.  The Web Application Developer designs new web applications for the HSL, and provides support and maintenance of existing web applications. Responsibilities include needs assessment, system design, and the creation, documentation, optimization, and debugging of code. This position integrates both development and project management skills in order to drive change and continuous improvement of the Library’s web services. Responsibilities also include testing, deployment, and troubleshooting/maintenance of Web applications and platforms, in particular the Drupal content management system (CMS). 
Developer level (Senior Professional):At the Developer level, this position performs design, development and maintenance of the library’s Drupal website as well as other library web sites and services.
Web Lead/Developer level (Principal Professional):At the Web Lead/Developer level, this position performs all duties defined at the Developer level. At this level, the position will perform as the web projects manager for the library, working closely and assigning project related tasks to the Web UX Specialist.  At least two years of full time experience designing and maintaining Drupal websites is required to be considered for hire at this level.  
Supervision Exercised:The position performs no direct supervision at the Developer level. At the Web Lead/Developer level, this position may function as a work lead and assign tasks to, but does not directly supervise the Web UX Specialist.
Examples of Work Performed:

  • Supports, maintains, continuously improves, and develops new applications for a library website currently Drupal 7 CMS. 
  • Uses knowledge of custom Drupal modules, PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript to adapt library websites to continuously evolving user needs. 
  • Performs systems needs assessment and analysis for Health Sciences Library patrons and staff; designs and prototypes new systems as needed; tests and debugs prototype and production systems; deploys new systems and responds with system changes and improvements in response to end user and staff feedback.
  • Builds, maintains and implements library web solutions that take advantage of APIs (which are typically provided by vendors of library web applications, such as, discovery systems).
  • Customizes vendor-hosted web interfaces implemented by the library (which may include but are not limited to news blog, Libguides, proxy server, and the discovery platform).
  • Maintains existing documentation of code and procedures and creates new documentation and procedures for newly developed web applications.
  • Develops library staff procedures, maintains documentation for staff end users, and trains staff on administrative and editorial tasks in the library’s web content authoring environment(s).
  • Responsible for knowing and implementing current security best practices in creation of any new web applications or maintenance of existing web applications
  • Together with System Administrators, plans, tests and implements web application software upgrades and patches
  • Helps to implement the library IT business continuity plan for data and system backup and recovery, with emphasis on the library’s custom web applications and code.
  • At Web Lead/Developer level, manages web projects which may include but are not limited to: website platform migration and creating new web applications for library staff and departments.  
  • At Web Lead/Developer level, is responsible for communicating tasks/projects to multiple units and employees of the library. Helps assign project tasks and gives performance feedback to the supervisor (Head, Library IT).

Salary and Benefits: 
The salary range for the Web Applications Developer Level (senior professional level) is $58,636 - $68,000 and commensurate with skills, experience and expertise.  This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.  

The salary range for the Web Lead/Developer Level (prinicipal professional level) is $69,000 - $79,000 and commensurate with skills, experience and expertise.  This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Minimum Requirements:
For Developer Level (Senior Professional Level) Appointments:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology related fields, or equivalent education and experience. 
  • At least 1 year full time experience designing and maintaining Drupal websites.
  • At least 2 year Javascript, HTML/CSS experience .

Web Lead/Developer Level (Principal Professional Level) Appointments:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology related fields, or equivalent education and experience. 
  • At least 2 years full time experience designing and maintaining Drupal websites.
  • At least 3 years Javascript, HTML/CSS experience. 
  • Demonstrated project management experience.

Substitution: At either level, a combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis, but not the specific year(s) of work experience.
Preferred Qualifications: 
Candidates will possess some of the following characteristics:

  • Master’s degree in information technology, web development, library and information science, or related fields. If present, replaces Bachelor’s degree requirement
  • Experience working with faculty, staff and students in a higher education environment  
  • Project Management certification(s)
  • Supervisory experience in the area of professional web development
  • Experience with improving and implementing UI for library resource discovery systems, Ex Libris Primo preferred
  • Working knowledge of common core and contributed Drupal modules, including Views, Rules, and Panels
  • Experience with Bootstrap, JQuery and/or and Angular JS frameworks
  • PHP development experience
  • Understanding of and experience with web site search technologies, including the ability to customize and optimize open-source search solutions
  • Experience implementing web accessibility improvements, including Section 508/WCAG  accessibility guidelines
  • Experience with web site platform migration, e.g., from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8, or from Drupal to some other CMS
  • Apache, IIS, and/or Nginx configuration and administration skills and/or experience with running Drupal on Microsoft IIS
  • Experience with Drupal Composer and/or the Drush shell environment for Drupal and experience with revision control systems such as GitExperience with implementing Backdrop Drupal distribution
  • Completed SANS cyber security for developers coursework and/or certification
