Job Description


Under the limited supervision of the Library Coordinator, Library Assistants are responsible for performing customer service and administrative duties relating to library services and the circulation of library materials.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: working at the circulation desk, serving patrons and contributing to library organization and upkeep. May be asked to help with additional duties under the direction of District staff and/or management.


  • Provide all patrons with excellent customer service in order to consistently deliver a positive library experience, both in person and over the phone.
  • Promote the Library District throughout the community.
  • Assist patrons in locating, selecting and researching materials, both in print and online, referring patrons to additional resources as necessary.
  • Assist patrons in the use of computers, internet devices, library equipment (copier, scanner, fax machine, etc), and the Public Access Catalog.
  • Handle the duties of the circulation desk such as, but not limited to: checking out and renewing materials, checking in returned materials and collecting fines if necessary, issuing and/or renewing library cards, and maintaining attendance statistics.
  • Return materials to shelves accurately and in a timely manner, and ensure that shelf organization is maintained, including periodic weeding of older books and shelf reading.
  • Assist in the administration of the Summer Reading Program and other library programs by preparing displays and marketing materials, maintaining records and contributing throughout the implementation of the program.
  • Prepare regular displays for the library.
  • Conduct internet searches and help patrons with internet use.
  • Assist with Story Time by reading stories to children, as needed.
  • Assist with the organization of book sales.
  • Contribute to general library upkeep, in order to maintain clean and welcoming library spaces.
  • Troubleshoot and repair minor computer/device problems for patrons and assist them with other miscellaneous computer tasks.
  • Assist with the maintenance of library collections including accessioning, borrowing/lending activities and cataloguing functions as needed.
  • Expand and enhance knowledge of library trends and developments on a regular basis through the ongoing pursuit of educational opportunities.
  • Regular maintenance on building, yard and equipment, including computers.
  • Respond to and handle patron inquiries and complaints, forwarding complaints to the Interim Library District Director when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Requires a level of independent judgment and initiative to accomplish tasks and solve problems in a consistent and accurate manner and in a variety of situations.  An essential aspect of this position is the creativity and innovation required to enhance the mere application of a skill. Such a level is generally acquired by at least two (2) years of experience in a library environment.  Experience must provide a working knowledge of library organization and procedures, as well as the Dewey Decimal System.


High School Diploma required.  Some college preferred.


Must be highly skilled with computers, internet devices and standard office equipment.  Must be proficient in reading and writing English, and in applying library rules and procedures.  


Work is primarily performed in an office environment, and includes the following physical activities: standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and keyboarding.  Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds. Hearing voice conversation is essential to safe and effective job performance. Clear Creek County Library District provides reasonable job-related accommodations for persons with disabilities.


SUPERVISORY: May be placed in charge when the Library Coordinator or District management is not present.
