OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:
Under limited supervision, to catalog non-fiction library books for the circulating and reference collections using nationally established standards; to create and maintain the online catalog to make library collections accessible to the public and staff; to work knowledgeably with cataloging tools and materials in various forms, and to perform related duties as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for independent decision-making for appropriate and accurate original and copy cataloging on incoming Library materials in an automated library system, using a thorough knowledge and understanding of nationally defined and developed guidelines. Must know and use detailed and complex standards and tools including, but not limited to: MARC coding, AACR2 and RDA cataloging rules, Dewey Decimal Classification System, Library of Congress subject headings, and Library of Congress authority files. Applies highly specialized knowledge with a great degree of accuracy to assure thorough access to library materials through standardized display in the online catalog. Uses extensive cataloging knowledge and skills gained from training and on the job experience to create bibliographic records in MARC format, according to nationally prescribed cataloging rules. These records must meet appropriate standards for sharing in a local consortium, as well as within a statewide bibliographic database. Develops and maintains high level of knowledge of all areas of responsibility for maximum productivity. Knowledge and skills needed include a broad educational background to perform accurate subject analysis and classification of library materials.
- Exercises informed and independent judgment in selecting, evaluating and editing records from available sources to meet national requirements as well as local needs. Maintains knowledge of the full range of online bibliographic record resources, including Z39.50 and the SkyRiver bibliographic utility.
- Uses training and expertise to maintain the database, correcting problems and errors or creating additional access points to catalog records, working with extreme accuracy and attention to detail. Uses and understands indexing and other retrieval aspects of the library’s discovery layer, to better prepare bibliographic data to meet users’ searching needs and retrieval expectations.
- Collaborates with Library staff and administration to provide internal customer service and to maximize effective manipulation and display of bibliographic information in the online catalog; accommodates public service needs through development of local procedures for cataloging and processing materials.
- Completes or reviews more complex cataloging work in all formats that has been pushed up by the Resource Services Technicians for additional expertise.
- Supports acquisitions functions through familiarity with basic ordering and receiving processes.
- Provides some processing of all Library items to accommodate access and shelving of all types of materials for the public and staff. May need to lift and unpack boxes weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Communicates professionally in person, on the telephone, facsimile machine, or computer to conduct Library business as necessary.
- Operates computers and uses the Library’s automated library system effectively.
- Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the City.
- Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
- Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and at least one year of experience working with bibliographic records. Prior work experience must demonstrate a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Willingness to take direction and learn a variety of tasks, working in an internal customer service setting. Good interpersonal skills. Well-developed keyboard skills. Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software, including Windows. Interest, desire, and ability to communicate courteously and effectively with and provide services to others, both in person and by telephone. Ability to work independently, and to maintain concentration in a busy, open environment. Willingness and flexibility to work a schedule that may include evenings and weekends. Ability to lift 40 lbs.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:
MLS degree or library cataloging coursework. Previous original or copy cataloging experience, knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification System and Library of Congress subject headings and authorities. Familiarity with FRBR and RDA. Experience with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. automated library system. Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English.

Physical Demands: Primarily sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift or move a maximum of 40 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking, standing, and pushing carts of books and other materials; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and the public.
Work Environment: Works primarily in a quiet, comfortable indoor environment. Work setting subject to interruptions and background noise.
Machines and equipment used in work include, but are not limited to, the following: Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, laser printers, telephones, and copy/fax machines.
