Job Description

  • Directs and manages the activities of a branch library.
  • Manages and supervises assigned staff, prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; disciplines, trains and evaluates 
    staff; counsels, coaches and instructs employees as required; develops staff skills and conducts performance 
    evaluations.
  • Responsible for branch materials collection, which includes weeding, evaluating, and selecting new titles to meet the 
    needs of the community served.
  • Responsible for community-wide outreach and library programming.
  • Provides reference services and assists the public in making effective use of the branch. 
  • Analyzes and evaluates materials, services and facilities. 
  • Develops and maintains appropriate procedure manuals. 
  • Provides high level customer service; mediates the most complex customer service concerns and resolves the most 
    difficult patron problems that were referred by branch staff. 
  • Ensures branch staff consistently maintains high standards of customer service. 
  • Serves as a resource for branch staff on library policy, procedures and practices. 
  • Serves as a member of the library leadership team. 
  • Oversees the care and maintenance of branch facility and library grounds and equipment. 
  • Develops, coordinates, and promotes activities to meet changing needs and to improve program services. 
  • Oversees and manages branch budget of restricted cash and other donations from the community; identifies grant 
    opportunities and prepares grant applications for submittal; administers grants; plans and develops fund raising 
    events. 
  • Acts as public relations representative for branch, which includes speaking to and involvement with interested 
    groups such as the Friends of the Library. 
  • Cultivates and maintains positive relationships with local officials, government entities, citizens' groups, public 
    service organizations, Friends, community groups, and the public; liaisons with community groups and develops 
    partnerships as appropriate. 
  • Plans and conducts regular branch staff meetings. 
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement in the current policies, procedures and systems; offers recommendations for change. 
  • Serves as a positive and motivational team leader as well as a positive and effective member of a peer group. 
  • Models outstanding customer service. 
  • Demonstrates commitment to service by attending workshops and educational programs, reading periodicals and 
    specialized literature, attending staff meetings, and participating in committees and organizations that further the 
    library's mission and goals. 
  • Keeps abreast of developments in library branch administration and library programs by attending workshops and 
    educational programs and reading professional periodicals and specialized library literature.

Additional Info & Requirements

Retirement Plan 2% @ 55 for classic PERS members; 2% @ 62 for new PERS members. 
Holidays and Vacation Vacation is based on years of service beginning at 15 days per year. There are 11 paid holidays per year. 
Other Leaves: Sick leave includes 12 days per year. There is also bereavement leave and 10 days of administrative leave per year. 
Life Insurance The County covers $25,000 in life insurance with additional coverage available for purchase by the employee at minimal cost. 
Health, Dental and Vision Insurance These are provided to the employee and dependents with costs being shared by the County and employee. 
Deferred Compensation The County provides a voluntary 457 programs in which each employee may elect to enroll.

The Community

The Library - Butte County Library is a large rural library system with six branch locations, adult literacy services, and digital 
literacy outreach. The Library is known for its innovative, hard-working staff, which includes library leaders, program 
pioneers and numerous grant winners. Both para-professionals and professionals play an important role in successful programs for all ages. Butte County Library staff serve on many statewide library committees and advisory councils. 

The ideal candidate for the Butte County Librarian position is a professional, broad focused, lifelong learner who has a passion for working in a culturally diverse rural community. Working as a collaborative partnership with the community, staff, and stakeholders, this person will need to embrace the importance of outreach, leadership, and community engagement. This requires an outward focused problem solving perspective that is open and responsive. A working knowledge and interest in keeping up with changes in information technology and national and regional library trends is essential. Providing one on one assistance to library patrons in order to create a positive impact, with responsive quality service through the development of new programs to serve our community.
