Idea Factory Librarian

Pueblo City County Library District is seeking an Idea Factory Librarian to join our team of inventors, creative geniuses and friendly library professionals!   

The Idea Factory is PCCLD’s maker-space designed for exploration into anything from sewing to the latest technology.  We are seeking a librarian who has an eye on the future and a skill set for putting together programs that entice and engage our community. 

The Idea Factory Librarian will have a passion for facilitating adult learning activities in the library’s maker space. In addition this position will take a lead role in the Reference and Readers Advisory Department to provide expertise in responding to reference and readers advisory requests and promote library services and resources.

Who will you be working with?

The Idea Factory Librarian reports to the Manager of the Reference and Readers’ Advisory Department and occasionally works as the Person in Charge for the Rawlings Library.  This position leads team members to produce new programs and partners with outside organizations to create initiatives and provide relevant, high quality services. This position provides excellent customer service demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively with people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, abilities or background.  They will possess a natural respect for others and help facilitate access to information for all people and encourage the pursuit of life-long learning.

What are the Key Responsibilities of the Idea Factory Librarian?

Develop initiatives, programming and events that promote the use of the Idea Factory resources throughout the District.   Provide ideas for new resources and programs.

Stay current on library, technology and social trends by learning and integrating new technologies and ideas as they apply to the Idea Factory and existing or potential library resources and services.

Work closely with the Technology Trainer; develop and provide training to Library staff and customers on use of Idea Factory technologies. 

Promote use of the Idea Factory and R&RA events through development of print aides and advertisements in coordination with the Community Relations Department.

Develop reference services that meet the changing needs of the community by building partnerships with outside educational institutions, non-profits and other organizations.

Provide quick reference, detailed research and reader’s advisory assistance. Use information resources in a variety of formats including print, electronic, digital, audio/visual, database and internet resources.

Create positive experiences for customers by proactively offering assistance; assist customers with locating library materials and provides information to broaden their awareness of library resources and services.

Assist customers by providing information and instruction on use of all library resources.

Occasionally provide back-up coverage for the Department Manager and serve as the Person In Charge for the Rawlings Library.

Coordinates volunteers, oversees their assignments and approves volunteer time sheets.

Advises the Collections Development Department on needs of the library collections of adult books, magazines, audio-visual, database and e-downloadable materials.

Assists R&RA staff with difficult requests and acts as a Lead go to person for staff.

Resolves customer issues and communicates library policies and procedures to customers.

Supports team efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and staff by maintaining awareness of surroundings and working in accordance with safety policies and procedures.

Participates in regularly scheduled department meetings. Attends All Staff Development Days and other training sessions to acquire new skills and to stay current on all information that is pertinent to PCCLD.

Reads daily organizational communications from intranet, e-mail, newsletters and print announcements. Stays current on all library services, programs and events throughout the district. Regularly accesses electronic time keeping, payroll and personnel employee access systems.

What resources are currently in the Idea Factory?

Computers:  Same-day checkout laptop computers, iMac creative station, PC Laptop with CD & DVD burning capability, Apple iPads with video recording capability

Presentation equipment: Large format video screen, Whiteboard, Easel,  

3D printing equipment: Makerbot Replicator dual, Makerbot Replicator 2, Makerbot Digitizer 3D scanner

Special equipment:  Folding sound-booth for audio recording, USB desktop microphone, Old-school overhead projectors for mural tracing, Lego Mindstorm, robotics kits, 3-doodlers - pens that can draw in plastic off the page.

 New media equipment:  Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset, Leap Motion Controller, Kindle Fire advanced e-reader, Adobe Creative Cloud software, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom, Dreamweaver.

Audio & video recording software:  Garage Band, Audacity, Quicktime,

Additional Info & Requirements

Knowledge of general public library organization, materials, services and operations.  Thorough knowledge of reference materials, databases, and other resources available to customers.  Supervisory skills including creating work schedules, managing staff shortages, resolving general employee issues.  Knowledge of adult literature in print, electronic, periodical, video, digital and other mediums. Strong customer service skills with the ability to resolve customer issues and deal with disturbances and emergencies in the Library.  Excellent research skills. Ability to conduct reference interviews.  Ability to instruct and transfer information to a diverse population; knowledge of adult learning models.  Demonstrated ability to develop programming that meets the community’s needs. Knowledge of research techniques, reference resources, databases and internet resources.  Ability to conduct complex reference interviews, to analyze requests and to apply research skills to locate specialized information or provide customers with alternative sources.  Ability to function under flexible and changing conditions. 

Physical Requirements:  Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and push /pull a fully loaded book cart weighing up to 200 pounds.

Other Requirements:  Must be able to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings and weekends.  Must submit to and successfully pass a criminal background investigation.
