Job Description
The purpose of this position is to foster a love of books, reading, libraries, and discovery among the children and youth in our community through innovative programs, collections, and services.
General Responsibilities
• Develops and evaluates the children's and young adult collections and selects new
materials for acquisition.
• Plans, publicizes, and conducts library activities and programs for children and young adults.
• Assists children and families in using the library and its resources.
• Seeks out venues for and plans children’s outreach services.
• Maintains a fun and inviting environment in the children's library.
• Supervises and reviews the Children’s Services Assistant and Youth Services Assistant.
• Creates acquisitions and programming budgets and tracks budget expenditures.
• Guides the development of public relations materials and marketing for children's services.
• Acts as a community resource person for children's and young adult literature and non-print materials.
• Networks and with community schools, organizations, and other entities.
Additional Info & Requirements
• A minimum of one year of programming experience with children in a public or school library.
• Knowledge of children’s literature.
• Excellent communications skills.
The Community
McPherson is a community of 13,300 people located in central Kansas. Because of the city's solid base of light industry, McPherson is known for it's public amenities. The McPherson Public Library (www.macpl.org) is in our second century of providing library services to the citizens of McPherson. Our children’s library receives generous public and endowment funding for collections, programs, and services. The 27,500 sq. ft. library facility is the result of a $4.5 million renovation and expansion project completed in 2009, which doubled the size of the building. The new library includes significant enhancements to the children’s library, as well as a dedicated children’s programming room and prep area.
