Job Description

It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek, engage, and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community.  This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill PPLD’s mission by hiring, training, directing and supervising a staff of full-time and part-time employees, substitute employees, and volunteers to circulate, return and shelve all library materials with superior face-to-face, electronic and telephonic customer service, timeliness and accuracy. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Supervises, coaches and counsels staff of approximately 30; conducts evaluations for circulation and shelving staff; supervises and trains volunteers; prepares daily and monthly work schedules; coordinates substitutes for shifts, as needed

  • Maintain employee safety and create an ergonomic and safe work mindset and environment
  • Works in and creates a positive team environment; prioritizes and directs general operations and daily activities of circulation and shelving staff; ensures smooth operations through monitoring workflow, evaluating departmental statistics, and identifying improvements in process and equipment; ensures that staff maintain an efficient, courteous public image
  • Evaluates and resolves patron resolutions regarding patron library accounts to include lost and stolen materials, fines, collection agency issues, etc; maintains patron confidentiality in all interactions
  • Works on public service desks and in other behind-the-scenes processing tasks;  prepares book trucks for shelving; sorts and distributes materials to designated areas, and retrieves materials for other departments; shelves when needed
  • Approves timesheets for accuracy and timely submission to Finance; approves and records sick and vacation leave for circulation and shelving staff; ensures employee leave statements are accurate
  • Manages annual department substitute budget so there is adequate daily staffing, within budget
  • Maintains accountability for cash, check and credit card transactions and works with Finance staff to provide reports and daily accounting of on-hand cash
  • Makes recommendations regarding circulation and shelving policies and procedures as necessary; recommends appropriate personnel actions to manager. 
  • Evaluates job candidate applications, conducts interviews, selects, hires, and trains for circulation and shelving positions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required; prefer candidates with a two or four year college degree; highly preferred in the field of library science, business administration,communication or production management.
  • Two years of library or related experience and a minimum of two years of successful    supervisory experience. Strongly prefer candidates with supervisory experience in a library, industrial, production or customer service environment.
  • Supervisory and people skills, ability to supervise and direct others in completing assigned tasks efficiently and safely while maintaining a positive morale within  the department. Proven ability to resolve conflict is essential.
  • Proficiency with computer skills; intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, MS Outlook, Internet Explorer, and library database experience (SIRSI Symphony or similar); ability to type at least 35 wpm.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to work as an effective team member, have a "whatever it takes" work ethic, and have an excellent customer service attitude. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patrons face-to-face, via phone and in writing;
  • Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse patrons.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and perform work assignments with initiative, independent judgment and minimal supervision.  Analytical problem solving skills are required. Project management capabilities are desirable

 Requires the ability to perform the job’s physical requirements as explained in “Required Physical Abilities” above.  The selected candidate may be required to successfully pass a Post Offer Pre-Employment Physical (POPP) capacity test that will evaluate a candidate’s ability to meet the job’s required physical abilities as listed above. PPLD will arrange, fund, and conduct this test at an outsourced location.
