Job Description

The Denver Public Library (DPL) is a growing urban library system that serves the City & County of Denver. DPL sees more than 4 million visitors every year across its 27 locations, serves Denver’s most vulnerable communities through outreach and mobile services, hosts thousands of programs a year and manages a collection of more than 1.4 million physical and digital materials.We believe a strong library is vital for a strong community. The Ross-Barnum Branch Library is an urban, multicultural, intergenerational branch of the Denver Public Library.  Our team is bilingual, supportive, friendly, collaborative with a sense of humor. You’ll gain leadership skills in addressing a wide array of customers and their varied needs from technology, safety situations, reference, collection maintenance and more. This 1950s branch will undergo a future remodel in order to better serve the surrounding community. Bilingual language skills, team building, open-mindedness and flexibility are keys to success with our team!

DPL is hiring a Librarian to provide responsive and culturally sensitive customer service at the Ross-Barnum Branch Library. In this position, you will cover a public service desk to welcome customers, assist with questions, provide resources and reader’s advisory, and help customers navigate technology. The majority of your time is public facing and our team supports all library functions. A key aspect of this position will be ensuring an up to date collection - whether this be by supporting shelving, shifting, creating displays and leading collection maintenance efforts. We’re looking for candidates who are passionate about building connections in their communities and will participate in outreach activities as well as programming for all ages.

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Experience in providing friendly customer service.
  • Ability to pass a background check after the offer to hire has been made.
  • Ability to use technology including email, internet, databases, eMedia, social media and other software. 
  • Ability to prioritize multiple activities and handle interruptions. 
  • Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. 
  • Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers and the community. 
  • Ability to thrive in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups.
  • Ability to support in-library programs for customers of all ages. 
  • Skill in providing reference and advisory services to all ages. 
  • Skill in using and assisting customers with technology. 
  • Knowledge of publishing trends.
  • Second language fluency (Spanish OR Vietnamese)(preferred, not required).

  • A Master's in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution
Benefits & Additional Compensation Info

The full City and County of Denver benefits package will be offered. Though the full salary range is provided, we anticipate offers to fall between $48,633 - $56,536 per year.

Additional Info & Requirements
  • This position could be reassigned temporarily or permanently to another branch based on system wide staffing needs.
  • The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and will include weekend and evening hours. The branch is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays.
  • City Employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. All persons offered a position will be required to provide valid proof of vaccination prior to starting employment.
