POSITION TITLE: Youth Services Librarian EXTERNAL TITLE: YS Librarian
DEPARTMENT: Youth Services GRADE: 27 FLSA: Non-Exempt FTE: 1.0
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs all duties related to a professional librarian
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the Head of Youth Services
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May direct work of Library Assistants and volunteers
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Service to Library Customers
Provides a variety of services at information desks including basic instruction of library catalog, online databases and library procedures and policies. Offers excellent, proactive customer service for youth including expert reference service and readers’ advisory to inspire the lifelong love of reading. Demonstrates knowledge and appreciation of children’s literature, periodicals and audiovisual materials and current technology trends. Coordinates with the Collection Development Librarian to develop the library's print collection. Maintains a well-working collection through weeding processes.
2. Programming/Outreach
Develops and presents programming and outreach for the library with a special focus on children ages 6 and under, their families, and other caregivers of this age group. Provides library service and resources to children and families by interacting with youth and by developing activities that best meet their needs. Oversees services including story times, puppet shows, and early literacy spaces and interactivities; ensures programs meet library goals and objectives.
3. Leadership
Develops support and training for district colleagues by providing early learning programs and materials and serving as an example for all staff in proving library service to young children and youth of all ages. Facilitates resource sharing within the district. Actively participates and contributes to various library committees and networks with local organizations with similar early learning objects. May serve as library committee chair and may serve on community boards or organizations as an ambassador for the library.
4. Maintains self-development and keeps up-to-date on library affairs
Pursues professional development opportunities and recaps content with appropriate audiences. Reviews professional articles to keep up with developments in the topic of early literacy, including brain development, reading readiness, and additional information that supports parents and caregivers. Collaborates with fellow library professionals in order to contribute to the library profession. Practices self-evaluation and exemplifies advocacy for libraries and youth.
Maintains self-development and keeps up-to-date on Library affairs by attending monthly staff meetings and trainings, external trainings as requested, and by staying aware of changes via staff wiki.
5. Performs other duties as assigned or requested
Communicates consistently and in a timely manner and through email. Works with others to complete assignments. Performs additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the department and the Library in achieving specified goals and objectives.

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license and to transport self to other library and
community locations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to communicate verbally
Ability to maneuver about the library in a timely fashion
Ability to read a minimum print size equal to 10 point
Ability to tolerate dust, mold, etc. that may have accumulated on books.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited graduate program strongly preferred.
From the right candidate we will accept an agreement to enroll in an accredited MLS or MLIS program from an ALA accredited graduate program within six (6) months of employment in this position with the intention of completion within three (3) years.
2 – 3 years’ experience working in a public library setting desirable
SCHEDULE:
Unpaid meal break of at least ½ hour per day to be taken for each 5 hours scheduled.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to be available to work flexible hours to cover unplanned staffing shortages.
SALARY RANGE:
$22.24 per hour DOE
