Job Description

Job Title:                             Outreach Intern 

Reports To:                        Outreach Librarian

FLSA Status:                       Non-exempt, Part-time 15 – 20 hours per week,

Summary: Develops a comprehensive list of local organizations and housing options that provide services and resources to older adults and/or people living with disabilities. Identifies key organizations and conducts a needs analysis to determine gaps and needs and how the Library District can help.

Outcomes: The intern will have the opportunity to learn how to conduct a needs analysis and gather the results in order to write a report (or practice and improve their skills if they are already familiar with needs analysis and reports). They will also be presented with networking opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Creates a welcoming environment that fosters equity, diversity and inclusion by seeking to understand, respect and value individual differences. 

·         Identifies organizations and housing options that provide services and resources to older adults and/or people living with disabilities.

·         Conducts needs analysis to determine gaps and needs and how the Library District can help.

·         Studies and evaluates demographic and other data in order to understand needs and develop optimal services for diverse populations in the community (focus on older adults and individuals with physical, emotional and mental disabilities or challenges).

·         Schedules and leads meetings at various locations in the community, online, or inside the library to address our target population’s needs.

·         Creates a comprehensive report of findings and recommendations.

·         Advocates for eliminating barriers to library service for adults based on socioeconomic circumstances, culture, privilege, language, gender, ability and other diversities and for overcoming systems of discrimination, exclusion and ethnocentrism.

·         Communicates and collaborates in partnership with other organizations serving unserved and underserved individuals and groups in the community.

·         Other duties as assigned.

·         Knowledge of library services and materials.

·         Excellent communication skills and sensitivity to the particular needs of the public.

Education/Experience:

This position is intended for undergraduate and graduate college students with a degree or coursework in Social Work, Human Development, Occupational Therapy, Prevention and Intervention Sciences, or related field.

Language Abilities:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, the community and/or employees of an organization.

Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Spanish or any other second language is preferred.

Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid driver’s license.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

The work environment is varied.  Position involves frequent, short distance travel (mileage reimbursement provided), and performing work outside of library facilities in various District communities and varied venues.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the intern is regularly required to sit; stand; walk reach with hands and arms; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; talk and hear.  The intern is frequently required to use hands to handle or feel.  The intern is occasionally required to climb and balance.  The intern must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
