Overview:
The Teen Library Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and managing the operations of the Central Teen Library. The Teen Library is a newly expanded service at Central and the Teen Library Supervisor will build a brand new team to provide services in a newly constructed space. The role requires the ability to plan, organize and implement programming and services at the Central Library for youth ages 12-18. The position entails supervising and training staff, maintaining the collection, and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all teens.
The successful candidate for this position should be prepared to pay for parking (~$200 per month), use public transportation or other alternative means of transportation to get to and from work. This job is located on site at the Central Library in downtown Denver with very limited opportunities to work from home. Additionally, the Denver Public Library system is committed to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of its operations, including the teen department. The successful candidate for this position should share this common commitment and have experience working with diverse populations to create a welcoming and inclusive environment. This role includes supervisory responsibilities for up to 10 staff members. For approximately the next year, the primary work schedule will be Sunday through Thursday.
Responsibilities:
Develop, coordinate and oversee a team delivering teen programming and services at the Central Library, including but not limited to, activities aimed at engaging teens with the library. Select, train, and motivate a team of librarians, shelvers, and clerks. Team supervision includes setting job standards and objectives, appraising performance, and creating and maintaining work schedules to cover multiple service points.
Maintain and manage the teen collection at Central in collaboration with the Youth Services and Collection Development Departments, ensuring that it is diverse, relevant and up-to-date.
Create and maintain a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment for all teens, ensuring that they feel comfortable and supported in the library.
Provide reference and readers' advisory services to teens and assist them in finding appropriate materials.
Actively participate on multiple leadership teams, including building-wide person in charge shifts, public services leadership team, collaboration and cross-training across Central, and youth services system-wide collaboration
Coordinate outreach to engage youth in the neighborhoods around the Central Library. Develop and maintain partnerships with local schools, community organizations, and other agencies that serve teens to promote library services and resources.
Evaluate and analyze the effectiveness of teen services and programs, and make recommendations for improvements.
Maintain accurate statistics and prepare reports as needed.
Stay up-to-date on trends and issues affecting teens and young adults in order to inform programming, collection maintenance, and readers’ advisory.
Collaborating with other department heads and supervisors to ensure that teen services and programming are integrated with other library services and programs.
Leading or participating in system wide initiatives related to teen services and programming, such as Summer of Adventure, outreach to underrepresented communities, advisory, or special events.
In partnership with Youth Services lead, developing and maintaining policies and procedures related to teen services and programming, ensuring that they are consistent and effective across all Central departments and aligned with systemwide objectives.
Collecting and analyzing data related to teen services and programming to inform decision-making and evaluate the effectiveness of Central teen initiatives.
Partner with the Youth Services Manager, Central Operations Manager, and Grants Administrator in the planning, oversight, and reporting on grant funds.
Providing training and support to staff at all library branches and locations to ensure that they are equipped to provide high-quality teen services and programming.
Staying up-to-date on best practices in teen services and programming, and sharing this information with staff across Central departments
About You
Requirements:
MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited program.
A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a library setting, with at least 1 year of supervisory or lead experience.
Knowledge of young adult literature, collection maintenance, readers advisory, and trends in teen programming.
Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Strong organizational and analytical skills. Ability to plan, implement and evaluate programs and services, including budget management.
Ability to facilitate, lead, coach, mentor and hold staff accountable.
Experience working with diverse populations and creating inclusive environments.
Proficiency with technology and library-related software.
Ability to work flexible hours, including scheduled evenings and weekends.
Salary:
The salary for this position may vary depending on location, experience, and qualifications. The average salary for a Teen Department Librarian Supervisor is $70,765 to $93,764 per year.
Other things to know:
This position will be primarily located at Central Library, which does not provide free parking. We offer a free EcoPass to access public transportation.
