Job Summary:
The Cataloging Specialist II catalogs library materials in all formats for the circulating and reference collections using nationally established standards. They create and maintain online catalog records to make library materials accessible to patrons. They are knowledgeable in the use of cataloging tools and resources. The Cataloging Specialist II communicates in English or Spanish, as appropriate, when performing their work.
Essential Functions:
- Accurately performs copy cataloging for library materials in the integrated library system. Batch loads vendor-created records, checks consistency and quality, and makes corrections as needed. Primarily catalogs non-fiction materials and catalogs material in other genres as needed. Exercises informed and independent judgment to evaluate, select, and edit records from available sources that meet national standards as well as local requirements. (45%)
- Creates original MARC-format bibliographic records according to nationally prescribed cataloging rules. (35%)
- Performs maintenance of the library catalog database, corrects problems and errors, creates additional access points for catalog records that allows for effective manipulation and display of bibliographic information. Responds to colleagues' questions and resolves problems related to library materials and catalog records by promptly communicating courteously and effectively with others. (10%)
- Supports the physical processing of materials and data management, including but not limited to loading and troubleshooting MARC records, Edifact ordering, and invoicing. (10%)
Additional Responsibilities:
- Maintains knowledge of the full range of online bibliographic record resources, including Z39.50 and bibliographic utilities.
- Attends regional cataloging meetings.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education and experience – Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education that includes a broad educational background to perform accurate subject analysis and classification of library materials. At least one year of original or copy cataloging experience. Prior work experience must demonstrate successful performance of tasks the require a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Technical experience – Intermediate skill using personal computers and software, including Microsoft Windows 365. Experience applying detailed and complex standards and using tools including, but not limited to: MARC coding, AACR2 cataloging rules, Dewey Decimal Classification System, Library of Congress subject headings, and Library of Congress authority files.
- Skills – Skilled with analyzing information for accuracy and organizing information and materials in a logical manner. Self-directed and able to concentrate on tasks in a busy, open environment.
- Language Skills: Reads, writes, and speaks Spanish fluently.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Library Science or library cataloging coursework.
- Familiarity with FRBR and RDA cataloging rules.
- Experience using Innovative Interfaces, Inc. integrated library systems.
Work Environment:
Physical work in an office environment. Exerting up to 40 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Performing repetitive motions. Grasping, lifting and/or raising objects from a lower to a higher position, or moving objects horizontally from position to position. Seeing, hearing, and speaking required. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
This is a 40-hour per week, non-exempt role.

$26.00 to $28.92 per hour
