Job Description

The Librarian II is a full-time exempt, professional, managerial position responsible for coordinating, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of a designated library division. Under the general direction of the Deputy Library Director, this position ensures alignment with the library’s mission, goals, and service standards. Provides leadership to assigned staff, oversees day-to-day operations, and contributes to strategic planning and organizational development. The role also includes performing public service duties and participating in the overall management of the library.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:  

  • Provides leadership and supervision for a team of professional and support staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and performance management.
  • Oversee the development, coordination, and evaluation of library programs and events for diverse audiences, including children, teens, adults, and older adults.
  • Develops and executes outreach strategies to promote library services and programs in the community including outreach to schools, childcare centers, older adult centers and local organizations.
  • Assists in supporting members of the Lafayette Youth Advisory Board with agendas, meetings, and events.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with local organizations and community partners to enhance program offerings and expand the library’s presence in the community.
  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains a courteous, positive image of the library when interacting with customers and staff; works at service points providing information, technology support, reference services, and reader's advisory services; responds to inquiries and answers questions regarding library policies, procedures, and records; and maintains customer and staff confidentiality.
  • Gathers, analyzes, and uses data related to Library programs and outreach for planning, management and communicating impact.
  • Assists in developing and tracking budgets in alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Serves in a rotation as person-in-charge of the library facility.
  • Keeps current on Library trends and technology.
  • Participates in Library and/or City work committees, teams, and training as assigned.
  • Serves as a member of the Library Management Team and uses leadership skills to provide vision and guidance to Library staff while contributing effective strategies and workplans for Library services.
  • Oversee daily operations of programs and outreach team, including supervision of personnel
  • Oversee planning for section.
  • Administer and implement specific portions of the department’s budget; perform statistical analyses of collection usage and expenditures.
  • Maintain and report statistics; make recommendations for expenditures.
  • Set goals and standards for section.
  • Oversee adherence to library policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Serve on the library leadership team and assist with library innovation, planning, management and governance.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, staff, and administration.
  • Plan and arrange workload and establish priorities to complete assigned work within parameters and deadlines assigned by supervisor.  
  • Deliver work product and service with responsiveness, courtesy, and tact.
  • Participate in the public service desk rotation, as required.
  • Keep abreast of current trends in the field through participation in user groups and attendance at conferences, workshops and meetings.
  • Participate in work committees and teams.
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.

  • A positive, forward-thinking attitude and willingness to take calculated risks. General curiosity and an eagerness to learn new things.
  • Ability to work one evening per week and one weekend per month.
